A short bit of a story/explanation --
By Junior year, I decided I was unlikely to get into Medical school at all (3.13 GPA, < 3.0 sGPA). However I managed to crank it up for my last 4 semesters. Upward trend includes A's in two semesters of physics, upper level bios, upper level classes in the humanities (English, Religious studies, History). There were some "fluff" classes (theater, visual arts) but with all considered last 2 years I have had a GPA of approx 3.7. Graduated with the above (3.57) GPA and rekindled my ambitions.
Other notes:
Lowest grades = D+ in Orgo II (retaken w/ C+), C in Orgo I, C+ in Cell Bio, B- in Gen Chem II
MCAT: 12 v/10 bs/8 ps
EC: 100 + hours shadowing (Incl 20 hours shadowing DO)
150 hours of research (no publications or presentations outside of school poster sessions, but full autonomy in some cool genetics projects)
384 hours of community service, but spread out over approx 8 years in Summers in India (Family is Indian)
~ 200 hours of clinical service, but again same activity for approx 8 years in India
90 hours of college writing tutoring during junior/senior year
Currently starting volunteering in new hospital, as well as a local food bank
Letters: Committee Letter which graded me on a scale from Outstanding, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair etc... as "Between Excellent and Very Good" (yup)
Applying both MD and DO. Focused more on DO as that is a more realistic option. MD schools exclusively in state (NY). DO schools looking for those concentrated in the Northeast.
So far:
-- MD options include Albany, NY Medical College, SUNY upstate, Stony Brook
-- DO -- PCOM, LECOM, NYITCOM, Touro
Do I have a chance? Which other schools should I look into? What can I do to best improve my chances?
Thank you!
