hey guys,

I'm new to the forum here. Current 4th year. I was just wanted some honest input about my chances at gas. Some stats
Usmle step 1 230
Comlex level 1 528
Comlex level 2 pending
I did not not take usmle step 2.

I only have one anesthesia set up this year which would be in September. My only touch of anesthesia was on my surgery rotation and I loved every aspect of it. How much of an uphill battle would it be to match into anesthesia acgme as a osteopathic student?

Thanks for any input guys

Appreciate the input. Do you all think not having any formal rotations in anesthesia during 3rd year and not in 4th year until September would have any bearing on me? That's unfortunately the earliest month I was able to get a gas rotation

Best way to put into context your chances: Do you have a pulse sir/madam ?

NO....

Anesthesia is no longer competitive

Informally, I've heard there are people who match into anesthesia without any rotations or LORs from anesthesiologists, but I don't know what this is based on. It might be worth asking on the anesthesia forum?

if you are interested in anesthesia, do some anesthesia rotations. doesn't have to be away. i didn't do any awayss. it increases your chances. but you'll likely match without it anyway

No problems at all if you apply broadly and get decent letters.

Try your damdest to get an earlier Anes elective!!!

Thanks guys. Unfortunately for me September was the earliest I was able to get a rotation. But I'll definitely take your guys advice. Appreciate it

Hey guys,

Wanted your opinion regarding my chances at anesthesia. I searched NRMP but I don't feel it gives a good representation of a DO chances of matching as we are grouped as independent with IMGs.

Prior to medical school, I was a physician assistant working in pain management x 3 years
D.O. school, no red flags, no fails, first 2 years mostly A's with a few B's.
Third year all A's. GPA 3.8.
Step 1: 211, Comlex Level 1: 513
Comlex PE = Pass
Step 2: 228, Comlex Level 2: TBD
1 poster presentation after doing a medical mission trip (non anesthesia related), no notable research or extracurriculars beyond non-traditional life experience and prior career.
Already did an anesthesia rotation during 3rd year and one more during 4th yr.

I am from NY so ideally I would like to match somewhere in northeast but applying broadly would be smart. I was really hoping to show a solid improvement over my below average Step 1 score. While I did have a 17 point improvement in Step2, its still below average.

How many programs should I apply? 60? 80? 100?

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

NRMP has the data:

Apply to ~60 and you will match..

Quick update guys: received COMLEX level 2 score of 597. So with USMLE 1 of 230, COMLEX level 1 of 528 would applying in to 40ish programs be enough?

This is from NRMP Charting Outcomes for the DO (2016), I think you'll be fine:

Do you guys know what's a good amount of interviews to go on during interview season? I've got 10 so far but adding more means missing 4th year rotations and my school is like the FBI and only allows us to miss a certain amount of days for interviews

There is a post directly above yours that addresses this. There is a strong plateau after 10 interviews and what looks like a 100% match rate at 12 interviews.

read this as matched w/o any LORs whatsoever
