i am currently a second year dental student who came into dental school with the sole purpose of getting into perio residency. I want to be a periodontist more than anything and i was wondering how hard it is to actually accomplish. i am doing research in the perio dept and i have worked in a perio office as a dental assistant in the past. Do i really need to be in the top 10% of the class to do perio?

No.
You want to do perio and have a desire for it. That should pretty much do it as long as you don't go around killing puppies on the side.

Do you have a pulse?
yes I have a pulse but my class rank isn't that great, it's just barely below the 1/3 point and will hopefully keep rising throughout the year.
