Hey everyone - wanted to get some advice and get "chanced" for orthodontic residency?

A little about me:
-4th year
-Currently 10th/75 but might either increase or decrease by 1 or 2 spots.
-Rep for the provincial (aka state) dental association for my school
-Founder of ortho club at my school
-President of another major program at my school
-Past president of another club
-Hold 3 other exec positions
-Top 5 in a case competition for a business idea in dentistry
-Publication from undergrad that I published during 1st year of dental school
-around 9 months of research at dental school but no publication
-Another Minor research position during undergrad
-Part of interview panel for the upcoming dental school class
-Going to be working 1 year of GP before residency (if I get in lol)
-Have references from 2 orthos and other faculty

-With that being said, do I stand a chance at less pricey schools?

I don't know about a chance at a less pricey program... Chance at residency, yes, but I would still plan to pay $300k+ realistically.

Wait, just wondering undergrad research can be written off when applying to residency programs during dental school?

Sure it can. Plenty of my friends that got in used that or their masters research. Also my publication happened during dental school so I was still writing it when I became a dental student

really eh - why do you think I lack?
Well class rank could be better. Do you have a ortho residency in your home state? Do they know who you are? These things matter. It's very difficult to get into those cheaper residency programs, you may need to be like top 5%. A lot of it is luck. And unfortunately race and sex matters too. There tends to be a lot of discrimination against white males and asian males when applying for these types of programs.

nvm rank is 8/75. I thought as long as you are top 10 you have a great shot lol

I'm applying this year as well and have a lower class rank (top 20%) and just hoping for the best. I have talked to a few programs and some of them don't care if you practiced as a GP but I have heard some programs love when applicants practice general. Grade inflation has been increasing and there are also a lot of Pass/Fail schools so I do think programs are trying to be better about looking at peoples applications as a whole. The class below me had 13 people tied for #1 in the class lol. Have you already taken the GRE?
