Been lurking for a little bit... finally registered! Yay. Anyway, my question...

I switched from Poli. Sci. and French to Ag. Biotech midway through my sophomore year (yea... big leap I know) because I grew as a person and discovered that "Hey! This isn't fun or interesting!" The unfortunate side to my decision is that I probably won't graduate until 2005 or 2006. I've been told that taking 6 years to complete a "4 year degree" isn't desirable (in the eyes of the big cheeses-ad coms). Any validity to this? Or should I not give a hoot?

Thanks!

Glad to see that you have made the jump into the posting world 🙂 Welcome to SDN 😀

I switched majors, and will graduate this year with my BS (after a grand total of six years of undergrad.) No one had any problem with it.... IMO, as long as you have legitimte reasons for changing your major (you're not just fluttering around, haphazzardly changing your major every few weeks) it should not hurt you. In fact, it might work to your advantage (you have more "life experience", a broader knowledge base) by making you stand out.

There is no problem with switching majors and then having to go longer to make up for missed time. I will say your post could be an example to those who are thinking about their major. In other words deceide EARLY so that you don't end up having to go longer than you planned in your undergraduate work.

Welcome to SDN! 🙂

Thanks to both of you!

Deciding a major early has its ups and downs. Having started a track (Poli. Sci/French) that is in a different college than the one I switched to isn't ideal. The college of Ag has about 10 hours of requirements the college of arts and sciences didn't. Bummer. On the upside... I'm doing something that I enjoy so much more and those 10 hours (of general agriculture, woohoo) are just a teeny bump in the road.

As a side note... when did all these changes happen? Much more entertaining, lol.
