What if I were to change my mind about my first choice school after I wrote a letter saying they were my first? Surely it would look bad to rewrite a letter saying "you arent my first anymore!"

Most PDs pay no attention to these letters. Many students send these "#1 letters" to more than one program. PDs are used to it. They rank the candidates in order of preference, just like students are supposed to do. Just let it go, certify your ROL, and relax until 3/16.

Bump here. I told my home PD I was planning on ranking home program #1. Now, I am strongly considering reranking them to #2. Unacceptable? Acceptable if I send an email informing the PD? Or just stick with my original plan?

you can switch it and appologize later if u match into other program..they are ur home program so will respect and understand ur explanation later.

No matter if the change was genuine, if the program you told was your #1 had you ranked to match, you come off very unprofessional.

Does this matter for residency? Probably not. They will roll their eyes and get over it.

Fellowship however, people will remember, and it is a small world.
