I am fed up with some of my habits. Why don't you share your motivational experiences of how you changed your bad habits? How do you maintain your focus on your studies?

I have an addictive personality so I always replace one habit with another that is less destructive.

I chewed my nails off for years - to quit that I started obsessively painting my nails. They were too pretty to bite. I would repaint them as soon as I chipped one so I could keep the "they're too pretty to bite" mentality. Resulted in me painting my nails with french tips 2-3 times a day for a year but in the end I neither bite my nails nor paint them obsessively (that just stopped because I didn't have time anymore).

I drank soda in ridiculous amounts for a long time. To quit I just went cold turkey - carried a bottle of water around to satisfy my need to drink something and drank milk or juice when I wanted something with taste. Since then I have also quit drinking juice so I'm just on water - does wonders for weight maintenance all those empty calories are out of my diet.

When I got to medical school I stopped working out for a while - gained some weight which made me really unhappy. So now I just ensure that at least 1 hr of my studying each night is just studying/memorizing something. That way I can go down to the gym and cycle for an hour while studying. When I work out I reward myself with a sugary treat. Eventually I'll take away the sugary treat and be left with the good working out habits.

In general, if you can do something for 28 days in a row it will become a "habit" to your body. They've done studies and its at that point that it becomes sort of ingrained in your body and maintaining it becomes much easier. So find a way that YOU can stop or start doing something and keep that up for 28 days and you should be able to keep it up after that much more easily.

Seems nice way !!

So, when ever you switch from some habit, do you completely avoid it?

Yeah I'm an all or nothing person so I cut it out entirely. Of course, then if I fail later I usually end up binging for like a week (like I did on Sodas during my last couple exams last quarter. But for the most part it works for me. For others its better to just cut down than cut out.
