I'm curious as to how this would affect medicine if chiros were given prescription rights.

Personally, if this ever happens, I think FP and Internal Med would go by the wayside since they would be rendered obsolete

The chiros make a good point about drug companies. Big pharma would love to have as many people as possible prescribing meds, so its reasonable to believe that they would lobby heavily for it.

Have the large pharmaceutical companies lobbied on behalf of various professional groups in the past for practice rights? I can't imagine that pharmaceutical companies would push to allow for an under-educated practitioner the opportunity to prescribe medications as there may very well be liability issues as well as bad press.

Why would the pharma companies be held responsible? Its up to the individual practioner to get it right, the pharma company has no say in that.

So the pharma companies wont see an increase in liability but they would definitely see a huge increase in revenues.

Keep in mind that naturopaths (basically like a homeopathic doc) have full prescription rights in Arizona and limited script rights in many other states

Always knew there was something odd about people from AZ, now I know what it is.

What's wrong with chiros prescribing drugs?

They are not going to randomly prescribe anything they dont know about in detail. First, they will get sued if anything bad happens. Second, there will only be a few drugs that they can/should/will use, based on a few diseases (arthritis) or back pains. Third, most drugs for these diseases wont kill or significantly harm a person.

And how will primary care doctors be obsolete. chiros do not know how to deal with cardiovascular diseases, etc. Would you see a chiro if you had a sharp stomach pain?

Chiropractors most certainly do know how to deal with these maladies! CVD, GI problems, neurological problems, cancer...these are all caused by subluxations of the spine, and the treatment is a lifetime of spinal manipulation.

i dont know about you, but if my family members have a severe stomach pain, they're going to make an appointment to pay the $10 copay and see our primary care docta.

And don't forget Eddie, most chiropractors are better than radiologists in reading films 😀

Yah I forgot about that. Guess I'll "consult" them when I need a little extra help as an attending

Sort of like the pharmaceutical companies pushing for the under-educated consumer's ability to buy Claritin? Primatene Mist? Benadryl?

You guys are taking this too lightly...

Did you know that in Arizona, naturopaths (people with ND degrees) can do anything and everything that a family practice/internal med MD can do?

That includes access to all prescription drugs, with NO MD/DO oversight.

I'm sure the MDs in Arizona thought the same way you do... yeah these stupid quack NDs cant hurt us, we're the guys in control here!

Now the joke is on them.

ummmm, except what kind of ***** patient would go see an ND (ND = "not a doctor" )

Answer: the kind of patient you want to avoid. I agree though, it has the potential to get ugly.

Canada is much more sensible. Hell, we don't even recognize DO's let alone NDs.

Actually, I think American DO's can practice medicine in Canada, but they have to go through the MCCEE like other foreign grads and don't have the exemption that American MDs do. Maybe there's a barrier further down in the licensing process, like at the provincial level? But from what I've read, a DO would have no problem becoming a licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada and admitted to a RCPSC exam if they did equivalent training in the States.
I looked into NDs in Arizona and I can't believe it's true:

The Board has developed an extensive list, or formulary, that includes not only vitamins and minerals, but also vaccines, antibiotics, oral contraceptives, anabolic steroids, and controlled substances such as morphine and cocaine. The federal Drug Enforcement Administration has recently approved Arizona naturopaths to prescribe controlled substances from the formulary because this appears to be in accordance with state law.

Now that is scary.

Not to hijack this thread, I believe DOs can practice medicine in some provinces (Alberta, BC Que) and only OMM in some (ON), and neither medicine nor OMM in others (Yukon).

MacGyver - I have decided that b*tching on a med student forum while sitting in front of my computer in Canada is not going to change US state licensing laws. All I can do is laugh -- and perhaps get involved politically when the time is right. I fully realize how slippery the slope is (and I know we are not immune in Canada, and hell, I may well be practicing in the US in 5 yrs), but for now I don't have any ability to do anything about it.

Just focus on getting into reisidency. And look on the bright side: everyone wants a piece of us. That means we must be doing something right.

Cheers
