What do you look for when deciding which Research Coordinator or Research Assistant positions to apply for? Would you want to work for a PI who is frequently second or third author, but rarely first author? Do you think that participating in a research program is extremely helpful in learning to do research right if your school does not train students to do research, or is it just as easy to learn on the job?

It depends upon what you want out of the job. Publication? Or learning skills? A good LOR?

I would like to really learn a lot, in depth and detail, about research. What are the ways to do that most effectively? Would you agree that the scenario in the OP would likely yield a good LOR, but possibly not so much the other two, publication or learning skills?
