What do you like best about your school?
* University of Cincinnati College of Medicine I love the non-competitive atmosphere and cooperativity of the student body. Everyone is very supportive. There is a strong committment among students to maintain a life outside of school and balance the stresses of life and career.
* Friendly environment of professors, students, and Dean's office staff
* The integrated curriculum and the "Test-Block" format. This means we have tests in all courses over an exam week, during which there's no class. Exam weeks are spaced every 3-6 weeks. This prevent the situation where you fall behind in some classes while preparing for a test in another. I also love the fact that we have so many amazing hospitals surrounding the school, especially Children's! Plus 4 students per cadaver, and anatomy all year, not in a rushed 6 week block!!
* Friendly students, no competitive atmosphere, state-of-the-art facilities
* Lots of support from faculty and administration for pursuing individual interests.
* The amount of clinical experience and responsibility for patient care.
* I love the integrated curriculum during years 1 and 2--it is by far the best way to learn. I also love the immediate exposure we get to clinical skills. This school has many opportunities, expects much from its students, and provides a superior education. I have no doubt that I have received a superior education, comparable to the BIG WIGS, and feel confident and ready to start my residency.
What do you like least about your school?
University of Cincinnati College of Medicine
* The curriculum in the 2nd year leaves a lot to be desired so far. The lectures are rushed, the resources are scattered and often inconsistent, and the amount of material as compared to first year seems entirely out of balance. I feel there are sections that could and should have been taught in the first year.
* I disliked the biochemistry course. I found it excessive.
* Many of the surgeons.
* It is an old complex that needs renovation.
* The location--it's in a rough area (not terrible, but I chose not to live near the hospitals).
Please share any other thoughts you may have about your school.
University of Cincinnati College of Medicine
* It's a wonderful, small city with many opportunities for community involvement both medical and social. Cincinnati is notoriously conservative and the school follows suit. There are few minority students. There are some wonderful directors in the first year curriculum. Their efforts to streamline and improve life for us students has been recognized, appreciated and successful. Unfortunately they haven't been able to convince the 2nd year committes that they too could benefit from some restructuring.
* The faculty are really on "our side." They have worked hard to make the curriculum integrated, and student-friendly!
* Overall, I would say that you would receive an above average education at this program and will be clinically well-prepared for any residency program.
