Hello,
I have recently been accepted to Ohio State off of their alternate list. Within 24 hours, I have to decide whether I want to go to OSU or to Cincinnati, where I was accepted in November. I have a strong feeling about both schools, but am still undecided. I would appreciate thoughts, opinions, feelings, etc. from anyone that currently attends either of these schools or has any affiliation with them. Any input is greatly appreciated, so that I may make a well-informed decision. Thanks.

Also, I forgot to mention. I have been invited to the Dean's Scholar's Program at UC. Does anyone know anything about this program?

Hi DNMD, congratulations on your acceptances. I hear Cinci is a great school; personally I am graduating from OSU in a few weeks and I have had a great experience here. I don't have time for an extensive post right now but here's a link to another post I previously made.

Ohio State

Good luck with your choice - either one should give you a fine education.

Ohio State and Cincy are both great schools and you will not be dissapointed with either. One thing to note is that Cincy is rebuilding their campus. While in the long run it will be an amazing new med center, the short term fact is that there will be a lot of construction. The new building should be done 2006-2007. This does not directly affect the current medical school (the new one is being built as an addition), and they are still making improvements...for example they are randomly putting in a new voting system that allows each student to vote on choices during lecture, and it displays the results directly on the powerpoint so the instructor can explain features. While it sounds pretty silly, it actually makes biochem lectures a lot more enjoyable.

There are a lot of posts dealing w/this, try a search and if you have any questions feel free to email me.

It may also come down to what financial aid package is given to you, as that was a big factor for myself.

The letter that I received about the Dean's Scholars program states that you periodically meet with the Dean and several senior faculty members to discuss current health issues. I was hoping to find out how often they met, and if there was anything else involved. Regardless, it sounds like a great opportunity.

I was accepted to both Cincinnati and Columbus, and I was turned off by the general area atmosphere around the medical school in Cincinnati, the physical plant, the students I met, and the sheer volume of classroom hours in their curriculum. A few of Ohio State's new facilities, the Ross Heart Hospital and their clinical skills labs (and more parking!) are either online now or will be by the fall. Classes rarely run past noon first year, are organized into nice, non-cumulative low-stress blocks, and there's lots of nice areas to live around the University. Whatever it is, I'm certain I'd have been a lot less happy at Cincinnati versus Ohio state.

As for the Dean's Scholar thing, I'm sure it might look fine on a CV somewhere, but once you're in medical school, it might just start to be annoying in practice; I don't know any more about it than you've told me, so I couldn't say with certainty.

After visiting both schools again on Wednesday and much, much thought (it is pretty much all I thought about since Monday), I have decided to attend OSU in the fall. I want to thank all of you for your comments. They were helpful as I reached my decision. Good luck to all of you!!!
