does this mean 2x batteries? does this change anything at all compared to the single pair of lines?
 
Yes, two batteries or two of any kind of EMF source. It doesn't change how you approach the problem. Since circuit elements in series have the same voltage, I think you can just add emf together. So if they tell you that each battery has an emf of 6v, your circuit has an emf of 12v.

Elements in series have the same current, in parallel have the same voltage. Regardless, this symbol most likely is 2 emf sources (batteries) back to back, so yes you would add them together.

Ah yea I meant to type series = current, parallel = voltage.
 
thanks. it seems that i'm usually given this image with a single voltage anyway so i probably won't have to worry about that.
