Hello....Do you guys mind sharing your stats with 2004hopefuls.

School Name?
Mcat Score?
GPA?
Age? only if you want to
Application process? gruesome? just another "history paper"?
Interview? nervous/drunk conversation/gruesome/just another blah blah?

NSUCOM
9-Verbal, 8-Biological, 7-Physical, P
3.72 GPA
22 y/o
Application process is long and tiring. So many papers to fill out if you apply to many schools.
As for the interviews. I really didn't have any trouble in my interviews. All were relaxed conversations about many topics. Not a big deal.
Hope this helps.

Ended up choosing UNECOM!!

Here's the key-get those apps in SUPER EARLY! Can't stress that enough.

38 yo male

1 year clinical trials coordinator for ALS and diabetic neuropathy, several years inpatient and geriatric mental health specialist, 2 plus years osteopathic medical assistant both volunteer and paid, foster care counselor and substance abuse counselor for abused children and young adults respectively, teachers aid for autistic 6th grade boy, big brother volunteer.

UNECOM is the only school I applied to, class of 2007.

I took extras ie. cell bio, genetics (micro, anatomy, physiology many years ago)

interview was conversational, no bombs dropped, just getting to know you style

I truly believe my osteopathic exposure made the difference for me along with the effort I've made with the extra classes and experience. Yet, going for it as an older applicant and being a notoriously avg standardized test taker, I made sure my strengths showed through.

Best advice: maximize your strengths, be truthful, and let your passion shine.

Good luck!

Interview offers at my top 5 choices: Western-COMP, U of WA, Touro, KCOM and U of Hawaii

Interviewed/accepted:
Western-COMP - Relaxed, conversational, great experience! I will be attending in Fall!
Touro - Best interview experience! I was treated respectfully and hospitably. Group interview was different, but not stressful at all!

Interviewed/waitlist/rejected:
U of WA - First interview, horribly stressful, ethical questions

Declined interview:
KCOM
U of Hawaii

Rejected w/o interview:
CCOM

Took my money and ran: NYCOM,PCOM,NOVA,AZCOM,UMDNJSOM

App process was not as tough as I thought it would be... but COMP and Touro have really quick turn around times post interview, so I had acceptances to two of my top choice schools w/in a three month period (primary, secondary, interview, acceptance)!

I've worked in various hospital clinical labs and a regional blood bank in various roles: as a lab assistant, phlebotomist, and most recently as a professionally licensed medical technologist.(nice to see a fellow MT NMH2001!) I hope this information helps someone out there!

PCSOM

Interview at PCSOM was great, very laid back, just the ethical questions tend to be a little rough.

Application process-all I have to say is start early. Start now working on your personal statement, so you can have it over with. Also, narrow down the schools you want to go to, don't apply to huge amount because it's a lot of wasted money. Find the schools that you want to go too and target them, go and talk to the head of admissions. Best of luck.

a 3 year quest. bombed 1st mcat (18) rejected everwhere for 2005, interviewed and waitlisted at TUCOM 2006, early accept 2007.rejected w/o interview everwhere else. A process that was the longest, most redundant, "hurry up and wait" and agonizing experience ever. I read on this board when i was going through the app process "everyone gets into med school, it just takes some people longer"
Oh and I have over ten years direct patient contact, being a bodyworker in a clinical setting with prior knowledge and direct experience with osteopathic modalities, also taught A&P at post secondary level.
you want in?, youll get in. im proof of that. best of luck to you all.

My interviews were really not what I expected. They ALL turned out to be really nice experiences. My first couple were nerve racking, but I kinda got used to it and they really became fun.
The worst part about the process was the paperwork/logistics, abd the $$$$

Best of luck to you!! Just relax and know yourself!!!

You guys made my DAY!!!! Thanks alot....now i know there is at least a slim light at the end of the tunnel. You guys are awesome!!!

to be honest this was my first year applying and I was accepted to the three schools that I applied to. I decided on KCOM for the reputation and tuition. I'm shooting for ortho and I felt that KCOM will help me in being competative for residency. I'm not going to sit here and tell you numbers don't count, They do!!!!!!! work hard and you'll get there.

My advice: visit the school you most wish to attend before your interview. let the admissions people get to know you. this is not a joke it will help. second, if you have the choice of scheduling your interviews a little, make sure the first one you go on is not your number one pick. KCOM was my first interview and my first pick and I got in and a sholarship, BUT if I could do it over I would make sure that I interview somewhere else first. It will relieve a great deal of stress for you. I know, I know ever interview is priceless. just some food for thought

cutty🙄

GPA:
3.1 (BS Biology)

I have been working as a hospital epidemiologist for the past 2 years in a 900-bed tertiary-care facility in the infectious disease department. Also did 2 years of bench work in a lab as an undergrad.

Age:

Application process:
Not bad at all just make sure you have everything in early and be yourself at the interviews. All my interviews were very laid back and enjoyable. The worst part is travelling and paying BIG $$$. Also, make sure you shadow a DO and get a strong letter of recommendation from them. Schools want to see that you have a "honest" interest in osteopathic medicine.

19 schools applied to
eightish secondaries filled out

Interview offers at all osteopathics with completed secondary
Interview offers at 1/3 allopathics with completed secondary

Interviewed at AZCOM, KCOM

AZCOM Interview Experience:

Started two hours away the night before in Tuscon, ended in skid row in Phoenix and a night sleeping in the airport, with a somewhat aggressive and unpleasant interview in the middle.

KCOM Interview Experience:

Nicest interviewers on earth, specially matched by the ad com to interests I mentioned in my application. Location and facilities left a little to be desired, but the people were unsurpassed.

AZCOM is heaven on earth, new, bright, progressive in its curriculum, willing to reward proactive students who know what they want from their education. After my interview offer there, I didn't even bother to pursue my allopathic opportunities (which were in-state and half the cost!) AZCOM is worth the 250K in debt for sure.

COMP, class of 2007

B.A., Japanese, UCLA
3.2 non-science, 3.1 science
D.P.M., California College of Podiatric Medicine, 1998
8V, 8BS, 8P, S

Actually, I applied to COMP in 1992 and didn't get in. Figured if I became a podiatrist it might help my cause (well, I guess I really wasn't thinking that, but it did).

Only applied to COMP. Interview was a cake-walk. Got accepted after one week.

One word. Persistence.

Interviews were both really laid back, however at UHS I think I got lucky with the interviewer I got assinged to. Some of the other interviews sounded pretty gueling. Overall interviews were very easy, didn't prep for either. The worst part of the process was the secondaries!!!! +pissed+

GPA: 3.5 BS in Film Production, Boston U.

Experience: You name it. I worked on movies for 4 years ("Good Will Hunting" "Amistad" and a bunch of indies) and then went back to school. Worked for a year at Planned Parenthood, did a study abroad in London last summer through Michigan State in Medical Ethics, volunteered at Mass General, worked as a prenatal councelor for teen moms, and currently work full time in an internal medicine office as a medical assistant. I also had a brief incaranation as a personal trainer/competitive kickboxer. I got tired of being punched, so I cut out the kickboxing. Now I just work out on my own and train a few clients.

Interviewed: UTMB (MD in Galveston, TX), LECOM, COMP, and Touro (4/9)

Accepted: COMP and LECOM. Waitlisted at UTMB.

29 yo white female.

My interviews were all pretty decent. I really enjoyed going to different places and looking at the schools. Applying to medical school is a total pain in the ass. There's no denying that. But it's a means to an end - and you will get through it. As you know, applying early really works to your advantage. I applied really late and know that I suffered (in some way) because of it. Try to get all your crap in ASAP.

Good luck everyone. I will always give advice, answer questions, whatever, if you need it.

Tiffany

Thanks to all of you attending this Fall 2003....I wish you the best of luck in all o your aspirations. You're in med school!

This info really helps us out. I'm applying for Fall 2004 and all of your words of wisdom are being written down in my "med school application" guru book. I'm currently getting my MPH at UCLA..has anyone applied with an MPH?? Do osteopathic schools like this idea?

I've also shadowed many MDs in addition to a DO...should I mention the MD shadowing experience? They won't hold that against me right? I hope not cuz half of those "shadowing" were in developing countries.

Finally, when do interviews generally start...october?

Thanks guys! And keep those stats coming..they help so much 😀

i had my first interview out of 9 in september at NJCOM, with only my lowly 20 mcat score from the april before. I heard of some schools interviewing even in the last week of august

I would definitely mention your MD shadowing experience, they won't hold that against you. Anything health related, osteopathic or not, always helps on your application. It shows them that you have some idea of what you're getting yourself into rather than just thinking that life as a doctor is just like on ER. Good luck on your apps process. 😉
