Class of 2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It's something I'm going to have to talk with the hubs about. We'd both like to stay here, though at the same time, part of each of us would like to live somewhere else for awhile, but perhaps that will happen during residency. I also feel silly spending what will be an awful lot of money to apply to a bunch of schools when I'm mostly interested in staying here. But the fact is, if I had to choose between starting in 2011 somewhere that would require a move, and waiting another year to hopefully attend a school in Philly, I'd move.

geekchic you have so many good reasons to stay in philly that im sure at least 1 med school will appreciate that and it will actually help you. whereas ppl like kirby just wanna get drunk downtown lolz (nothing wrong with that 👍)

but yea i feel like some of us will end up in school together (ie were all going to go to jefferson lets just face it.)

edit: good luck all mcat ppl.

I'm here! I'm here!

So I've been thinking, and this will depend largely on my MCAT score, but part of me is REALLY tempted to just apply to the 5 medical schools in Philadelphia. You can check my MDApps though I think I need to tweak it. My stats (MCAT notwithstanding, but I'm confident I will get an above average score) are competitive for all but UPenn, which will be a reach but I don't think it's beyond my reach, especially if I spank the MCAT. My EC's are pretty good, too. I'm going to gain some more volunteering starting at the end of the month and some day soon I am going to shadow a few different docs (that reminds me, I need to get on that).

It's just that most of our family (my in-laws retired upstate, but there aren't any schools within less than about 1 1/2 to 2 hours of them anyway) and our friends are here, and with kids I think it would be foolish to leave our support system behind. As a side note, one of my uncles is a mechanic who takes care of our car for next to nothing, we just have to pay for supplies.

It would take a significant scholarship, stipend, or a good job opportunity for my husband for us to consider moving for me to attend medical school if I were also accepted to one of the schools in Philly (PCOM included). My worry is that applying to medical school can be such a crapshoot, what if I DON'T get into any of the schools in the area? Then I'm boned for this year, and I'll already be 30 when I graduate if I get in for Class of 2015.

I know a lot of you are traditional applicants, and I think I'm the only one posting on this thread with a kid, but any thoughts anyone would care to share would be appreciated.

You're not the only one on here with a kid. I have a 7 year old son of whom I have sole custody. I completely sympathize with your situation and I think you will get some love from Philly schools. You are very fortunate that there are 4 good schools in Philly and they all have median stats in your range. The only med school near my support system has some of the highest stats in the country and is very selective.

Your MD apps makes you a strong applicant and you have plenty to write about regarding obstacles overcome and diversity in your essays. All of that should help you. I think considering the well being of your kid when selecting schools is a very important factor, and adcoms will understand that too.

I actually have very similar stats to you, and b/c I am a CA applicant I have looked at a lot of schools OOS. I've tried to look at schools with a reasonable cost of tuition and decent cost of living. I honestly think you will get into a Philly school, but if it does come down to you having to go elsewhere then you may have to consider moving and having your husband/kids follow you out afterward. It would be incredibly hard, but sometimes we have to make sacrifices to get ahead in life (being older than a traditional applicant I'm sure you already know that). Sometimes parents have to be gone for a while, like people in the military.

I would suggest making sure you fulfill all of the requirements for Philly schools and focusing most of my effor there, but also putting apps in elsewhere. It would be better to have some options available this time next year than have no choice but to reapply. I'm sure everything will work out for you, so try not to stress :luck:

im sure you will be fine. There are a ton of schools in philly, at the very least drexel should work out for you! 🙂.

Im having that same decision now. Do i stay close to home for med school? Or move far away but displace my wife and kid...its a tough decision that i still dont even have an answer to (and i start med school in a few months lol) 🙁.

Oh, good! Someone else! I have never been so thankful to live in Philly, truly. I'll be applying to all 5, PCOM included. I think the only one that'll be a real reach for me is UPenn, depending on my MCAT score. I think I'm at least competitive for Jeff (first choice), Temple, Drexel and PCOM.

Thanks! I certainly hope so.

I think my husband's head would explode at the thought, and he is an excellent father. LOL. What I'm thinking right now is that I will apply to all 5 Philly schools (and probably UMNDNJ-SOM since it's in South Jersey), definitely. I may also apply to Penn State, TCMC, the other 2 UMDNJs, U of MD (they prefer instate but there might be some good job opportunities for my husband around there) and a few schools in NY, city and state, especially ones that are "safe" for me stats-wise.

Because I'm lazy and don't feel like searching this whole thread, where else do you think you're applying to?

:luck: Good luck to any 1/29 or 1/30 MCAT people who are getting their scores back today!! :luck:

I'm going by memory here but I believe the # of oos acceptances for UMDNJ's is very low. If money is tight then I wouldn't apply to those. If you get that 31 MCAT then Einstein, NYMC, & Albany would be good NY schools (I haven't really looked at the other NY schools closely). I'm applying to Penn st. & Maryland (they take ~45-50 oos) also, so obviously I think they are good fits. Since you're from PA TCMC would be a good choice for you.

Schools that I'm applying to that are good for people with our stats and are oos friendly (besides what has already been mentioned):
Georgetown
GWU
Wakeforest
VCU
WVU
Creighton
UVM
MCW
Univ. of Wisconsin
Tulane
U. Illinois
U. Miami
St. Louis
U. Iowa
Rosalind Franklin
Loyola

Edit: OHSU seems like an awesome school and really likes non-trads. Avg age of entering med students is ~26.

I have seen that in the MSAR, but I read here a few times that when they submit their data for the MSAR they count everyone living in NJ by then (even if they are from a different state and have since moved to NJ) as a NJ resident, or something to that effect. http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=651756&highlight=umdnj+state+preference Starting with Chocolate bear's response. I know that's a pre-osteo thread but it's supposedly the case for their allo schools, too.
Another one where it comes up. http://forums.studentdoctor.net/sho...&highlight=umdnj+state+preference#post8313899

From reading those it sounds like it might be easier to change your state residency to NJ than it would be in many other states. However, you would still need to change your residency before you apply. You would have to look up the requirements to obtain NJ residency if you are interested.

I took it as they just don't submit their data for MSAR until a lot of matriculating students have changed their residency to NJ for the tuition cut and a lot of them are now listed as in-state students, but they weren't NJ residents when they applied. So, while they do have a an in-state preference, it's not nearly as extreme as what it looks like on the MSAR.

👍 That is awesome if it is true.

If it helps, according to US news RWJ had 2181 oos apply, 76 were accepted and 26 enrolled.

Stratford- 2826 oos applied, 78 interviewed, 53 were accepted, 22 enrolled

Too me Jefferson's LOR requirement sucks. If your school doesn't have a pre-med committe you have to get one biology, one chemistry, one physics and one humanities.

I'm sure they are great and if you're not satisfied with them you're partying with us on March 27th anyway!

just curious, how long do you guys study for the MCAT a day or how long is your usual session? I can go about 3 hours at a time and then i'm pretty worthless.

reviewing the tests/practice problems SUCKS! it's the worst part by far.

All of these inside jokes went right over my head.

I've been an absentee 2015er I guess...
