What scientists say.............................................................What they really mean

there used to be a funnier one that was depicted in pictures, but I can't seem to find it!!

Because people don't check and double check things and the email address lists are so unwieldy at times. It's obnoxious, but till people are better about safeguarding and maintaining data integrity in these systems, it's going to keep happening.

People I saw at work: my former PI whom I've wanting to reach out. One of my interviewer who recognized me before I did. Katy Perry and Kenya West.

Whelp ... rejected from UW last night which was pretty surprising to be honest.

All my chips are on Temple now.... :ninja:

I just happened to see that our friend @johnnytest picked up his first acceptance this afternoon, at Mount Sinai! Congratulations!

I hope that you'll continue asking questions even as an accepted student--we saw some pretty cool replies when you started this thread.

Thanks so much! I really appreciate the shout-out. Amazing and overwhelming feeling right now. But, SDN is an amazing community and I owe it and all the people on here so much. That thread was crazy btw.

I remember when you made the thread about not having any interviews in like Sept-October and being very nervous about having to reapply. So happy to see you have made it!!! CLASS OF 2019!

AHHHHH @johnnytest you were super-active on the Mt Sinai thread... so so glad you got that acceptance! It's always surreal going back through the school-specific threads because you can watch some users journey from uncertainty about their application, to shock at an II, to post-interview jitters, and (hopefully) to an outright acceptance!

Big big congrats to you Johnny! 😀 Sinai is an awesome place to be. Now you can take a well-deserved break from app cycle worries!

@ridethecliche looking for insight because I've never done clinical research, but is clinical as much of a time sink as bench research? I know bench research is usually not conducive to most med school timelines, so I'm looking to make the transition over and don't know exactly what to expect from the clinical end.

I've only ever done bench-work and my pub rate is like... one pub for every 2 years of full-time work. Love my lab and my finicky little cells, but sometimes the pace can be maddeningly slow. So many logistical hurdles. 🙁

Nooooooooo 🙁 My condolences, Joonage! Hope Temple gives you some long-awaited love. We're all rooting for you here!

It really depends on the kind of project, which is another reason I've been lucky.

Find a database that you want to come at with an interesting question that hasn't been looked at before? Probably 2-3 months from start to finish if you haul ass.

Starting a clinical trial for a new treatment? Good luck getting that done in the next 5 years...Depends entirely on what things are though. You can usually publish some stuff with 1 year follow up, but between your first patient and the last one you need to meet power, you're looking at months to a year sometime.

TLDR;

Retrospective big data type stuff? Depends on the data set and the question but feasible in 3-6 months.

Prospective clinical study? :diebanana:

Some of the stuff I've been involved with is longer term follow up of a previous RCT, retrospective analysis of a prospectively collected data set, and concurrent analysis of a prospective study with different questions.

Basically, try to find a good dataset to work with and milk it for all it is. If you're building one, make sure to capture more things than you need so you can ask tons of questions.

For someone like me with zero research experience, what would the best strategy be for me to start clinical research and hopefully have some pubs by residency application time?

Just go talk to a physician/professor who is conducting it and say you're interested in their work and want to work with them! People love it when other people are interested in what they're doing, especially academics. Plus free labor.

Yeah basically that.

I'd probably ask if I could sit in on some research/lab meetings, rounds, and shadow them as well before deciding to join their lab. You want to see what they have going on and get a feel for the place and projects. Also ask them for recs for a few pubs on their work to see if it's the kind of thing you're interested in.

Thanks for sharing, RTC! I'll have to spend the next few months bidding my little windowless lab and trusty pipettes farewell. *sniffle* Leaving bench work is going to be bittersweet.

Also to test the waters for possible LabDrama™.

I've been really fortunate not to have experienced it firsthand, but god... LabDrama should be avoided like the plague.

Ah, the LabDrama™. Great fun until it bites you.

omg lab drama is the worst..... I basically have a box of mouse serum sitting in the freezer for 2 months now because the project scientist responsible for shipping biohazard stuff in our lab is pissed off at my supervisor and won't do the paperwork for us -_________-

Happy Lunar New Year everyone~~~ Lot's of blessings for all! Especially if anyone was born in the year of the goat! 😛

My family members had a debate last night about whether it's supposed to be sheep, goat, or ram hahaha.

anyone else following the nba trade deadline?

Yup and nervous about it. Blazers just got afflalo which fixed their depth issues, and if Dragic goes to the rockets then I think that makes them favorites to come out of the west, or at least reach the ECF with Golden State.

As a mavs fan, nothing that happens today can be good for my team lol. At least we got Amare...

I'm confident that the Knicks will win the Big East tournament this year and perhaps, they'll even make it to the Elite 8!

im happy my wiz got ramon sessions for andre miller... AND hearing we're also going for jarett jackkkk

I did my taxes last Friday but they still aren't available on FAFSA (worried).
I think the FAFSA says it could take 2-3 weeks for the tax return information to be available through the IRS to upload onto your FAFSA. Instead of waiting I just plugged in the info from my tax return manually and then submitted my FAFSA. You can go back in a couple weeks and do the IRS Retrieval tool after you submit, too.

Interesting to see KG going back to Minnesota, too bad the team is horrible and he's already 38.

I actually like sheep because it's that in Korean.

Can Seattle trade for an NBA team.....?

Word around the street is that they're gonna get a team again with the next NBA expansion.

And @TxC it looks like its just a way for them to tank harder and shed contract by trading Thad young, while paying respect to KG by letting him retire there at the end of the year. Pretty cool move I think.
