Class of 2021 . . . how ya doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I remember feeling the exact same way. Like everyone is SO excited to finally start surgery and I was like oh crap...I felt similarly fourth year rotations too and I never took an additional surgery elective for spay/neuter because I was going to be a lab animal vet! I wish I had, even just for the surgery confidence. I now love surgery but when I see a spay in the schedule I still have to remind myself to chill 😉

Lol this is totally me..... everyone so excited about surgery and I'm like can I just be the anesthetist? I'm also pretty set on doing lab animal and going into a PhD after veterinary school!

Lab animal peeps do surgery don’t they?

Yeah for lab animal I feel like it also depends on where you're at. I am personally wanting to go the more research route (which could include surgeries). At my CRO this summer technicians did all the surgeries but with a medical device company the vet did the surgeries.. so IMO depends on where you're at or what you're doing. For me, once I get better and with more confidence I will like it but yeah just not stoked on spays and neuters but more experimental procedures which takes practice for whatever you're doing

A lot of it, according to my lab animal friends
Honestly it totally depends on where the lab animal peeps are working. Some institutions the PI's do all the surgery and the vets are more there for complications and post-op care, some places the vets do all of the surgery. Some places are a mixture - for example here when they're studying a new surgical model and the PI and half their lab are all human surgeons, they pretty much do all the surgery (we prep, run anesthesia, and do post-op care). For another lab group they just explain what they need done and we do the entire surgery, collecting biopsies, etc. So you could be in either the love surgery or dislike surgery group and still be in lab animal 😀

Personally, I love surgery. If I could be like one of the vets I worked with briefly and just do experimental surgery every day I 100% would.

DANG!!!!! Crazy magic right there. Glad my thoughts are correct then! I could possibly see myself liking it but for right now I'm just scared.. scared of failure which is driving my apprehension. Perhaps when I get more confident with my "hand skills" I'll feel more excited but right now I"m just bleh please don't hurt anything.

Our 3rd years are split into two groups (A and B). Group A has their first surgery on October 1st (week 6/8 of our first quarter). Group B doesn't have surgery until after October 20th during 2nd quarter. I'm in group B. I'm trying to not think about it until then. But I'm sure the weekend after finals, I'll be freaking out.

For me personally, what helped ease the anxiety was watching YouTube videos or reading text on the procedure. I’m a -very- sequential person so feeling like I knew the “order of events” helped me break each big thing like a spay down into smaller, less scary events. Like, first step is to induce your patient. Next, intubate. Etc. None of the steps of surgery are very scary-sounding when isolated on their own 🙂

Any of you see current 4th years and be like... that's going to be me very very soon :nailbiting:

Felt like a 4th year this week because we were living the life, and tbh it felt pretty damn awesome.

Bonus is that the 1st years are all in orientation now, and have no idea who is who and what is what, so I got to strut around with my stethoscope looking all legit and they don't have a clue that I am still a padawan

Mwuhahahahaha

It’s so weird... like... first years look up to me???? And ask me advice???? And they haven’t caught on yet that I actually have no idea what I’m doing. It feels amazing but also the older I get/ more experienced as a vet student and eventual vet, the less I idolize my heroes and that’s terrifying.

Even the second years here think we're super cool because we're on the actual teaching hospital campus now and we're on clinics lol

I don't know nothing and I'll gladly tell them that haha

Lol I was watching endoscopy on a capybara and a couple first years started asking me questions about it. Excellent exercise in bull****ting.
I still idolize my mentor though. She's a rockstar.

First years have been seeing me around quite a bit and so randos from our orientation or certain clubs have been asking questions. I had to direct people to real exec board members cause I'm no longer on that board as of 2 weeks ago. lol.

Whoa, whoa, whoa! Y'all do 3rd year clinics now?!?!

Little do you know that there are still (quite a few!) moments like that as an intern....and maybe sometimes as a resident when I'm off the neuro service...and sometimes when I'm on the neuro service.

and as far as surgery goes, I love neurosurgery but I have absolutely no desire to mess around in an abdomen that **** is terrifying

Perhaps... but it's neuro, sooooo :uhno::eyebrow:🤔 I'm automatically impressed.

On the intern thing, my little sister is a human doctor and said that intern year was the worst for those "oh gosh I am supposed to be the knowledgeable one?!?" moments, because you're far enough away from classes to have forgotten lots of stuff already, but far enough along in your education/career that people expect you to really know your ****.

(On the flipside, the week before she took her pediatrics boards she said "if you have any medical questions you've been wondering about, ask me now because this is the most book-smart I will ever be". I'm not sure if that is true, but from what she showed me of the practice questions, peds boards are an exercise in the absurdly obscure.)

....Capybaras are ...rodents...yes? That's about all I got for that topic.

Someone asked me last weekend if an armadillo was a mammal and I had to think hard about it for a hot second. (granted I was drunk, but still).

What was the most BS-y BS of the things you told them?

I want to meet your cats sometime! You inspired me to teach paw tricks to my cat, and now shake is his favorite

Yup, largest of the rodents!

I mentioned that there was suspicion of a fistula between the esophagus and trachea. Which, I had heard someone say, so not the biggest bull**** ever, but I wasn't sure how likely it was that was actually the problem. Turns out it was just a choke-type situation.

Someone (presumably sober) on VIN was asking a question about a procedure in sugar gliders and said something along the lines of "... But I'm not sure that applies since sugar gliders aren't mammals"

... :uhno:

Welcome back! :biglove:
Yay!! Hi w2vm we've missed you!
DUDE. We’ve missed you!

Huge congratulations to you!!!!! You'll do great tomorrow. Glad to hear from you!!
Your ears must have been burning, we’ve been wondering about you recently!
Hey, nice to see you! :hello: Good luck tomorrow!
Welcome back!!!! 😀 2021 is lucky to have you!!!!

Hot damn, all the loves. Thanks everyone! First week was extremely long, trying to get my body back into tolerating that much sitting. But we all passed which was great, at least they didn't make us wait about a month like they did after I took the first one to tell us our grades.

@WildZoo there's no way you can still be illegal in all 50.
@that redhead my legs were burning.

@vetmedhead I see you over in that V23 thread giving pep talks...come give me a pep talk!

I have over 75 farm animal diseases and conditions to memorize in full in under 24 hours (clostridium, anthrax or SARA anyone?), and in the meantime I have 2 homework assignments, a mandatory lunch talk about clinics, and 8 hours of lectures.

Lololololololololol

So yeah scrap all of this except the exam and the homework; see pets thread for why I didn't go to school today. Aaahhhhh

Luckily it is a small percentage of points, so you don't have to stress too hard about it. Was one of my lowest percentages for sure and I still passed comfortably. haha
