I plan on taking my MCAT next April (God-willing) and I wanted to ask if this course schedule seems to do a good job of preparing me. Any advice is greatly appreciated, such as don't take this class and but try to take this. That being said, I have one open slot for a class in both the Fall and Spring Semester and I was thinking of taking Anatomy and Physiology II (in I now) OR a math class during one of these semesters. On a related note, I am not too strong in Math, is there a Intermediate Algebra I could take to strengthen the math skills that I use rarely (in fact, what math should I know for the MCAT?) Here is my schedule

Summer 06 (all at local CC)
General Chem I
General Chem II
Microbiology
General Psych

Fall 06
Organic Chem I
Principles of Biology
Measurement and Statistics (major course)
Exercise Physiology (major course, but may help cuz of the Phys)

Spring 07
Organic Chem II
Physics II
Genetics
Prevention and Care of Athletic Injuries (major course)

I appreciate all your help..thank you so much!

Hi,

Your schedule looks fine. The intro biology, physics, 2 chemistry classes and orgo will be enough to give you the background you need for the basics. You have to remember that the MCAT is more than just the basics and needs significant problem-solving skills. In general, these may help you with the prep:

1. Go through the AAMC topic lists given on their website (http://www.aamc.org/students/mcat/). They give a detailed list of the subjects required/covered by the MCAT.

2. Get your hands on as many full length exams as you can. The AAMC ones (3 through 8) are the best since they consist of prior exams. Once you've taken the first few, you can learn of your weaknesses and target your studying to gain strength in them. Here's the site for more info: www.e-mcat.com.

3. This site has amazing info. Go through the 30+ MCAT study habits to see how people have tackled this beast, and the Study Questions Q&A for tips on all sections.

Best of luck :luck: .

So is there only 1 semester of intro bio at your school?

BTW, I'm taking Genetics now and the MCAT in April and I think it has really helped.

Thanks for the advice.

Yes we only have Principles of Bio and then a Zoology course to fulfill the Bio prereqs. That is why I am taking Anat & Phys, Genetics, and Microbiolgy..so I can gain a greater grasp on the information.

I'd consider dropping the micro & psych & just focus on chem this summer. Neither of those courses are particularly important for the mcat. A solid foundation (& A's) in chem is a real good idea.

I am not exactly an expert at this, but from what I have read over and over on SDN is to try to avoid taking pre-med reqs at a CC. (Community college). I don't know if you are just taking your summer courses at the CC or all, but either way, you might want to do a search on SDN, on what other more knowledgable people in this process have to say about taking classes at a CC. Good Luck!
