I'm trying to figure out what abnormalities would show up on a metabolic panel if the pt had any type of cancer. The specific pt scenario appears to be Horner's syndrome, but I need to know if a CMP/BMP would produce any results to support this. Possibly an elevated Ca++ level?

Help

Have you heard of pancoast tumors? How about SIADH?

Good luck!

Pancoast tumors do cause Horner's syndrome. Most Pancoast tumors are squamous or adenocarcinoma (NSCLC). If I'm not mistaken SIADH is more often associated with small cell, and is rare in NSCLC. Hypercalcemia is more often seen in NSCLC, and might be due to PTHrP secretion. Therefore, if the patient has a Pancoast tumor, my guess is that they'd be more likely to be hypercalcemic than have SIADH, although that's not to say that it would be impossible for them to have SIADH. Hope that helps..

Well, different tumors cause many different paraneoplastic syndromes, including tumors that aren't in the lungs. RR path probably has them all listed in the neoplasm chapter. (and if you don't own that book...then go buy it)
