Hey, has anyone that's going to temple dental collected their teeth yet? Are there particular kinds of teeth that we're supposed to collect, or do we just have the oral surgeon fill up our jar?

Also, has anyone used the recommended 1:10 dilution of bleach for the teeth jars by the school? I've heard of some schools using formilin (spelling?) to preserve the teeth in the jar. Cusp, what do you recommend? Any input is appreciated...thanks!!!

What's up XC,
My advice would be get as many teeth as possible. You will use them your second semester freshman year and during your soph. year for Endo. Use a thick, sturdy plastic jar...like a peanut butter container or something that won't break if you should drop it. Get a ton of teeth from whoever, because you will have friends at school who don't get alot and also the more you have the greater the variety. ALot of tmes you will just get 3rd molars. Also request teeth that HAVE NOT been restored, because teeth with alamgams or caps serve no purpose to us. Stick with the 1:10 Bleach solution, it doesn't stink as bad and is easy to make. Guess that answers all your questions, good luck and enjoy your summer.....I still have class till Friday.

Formalin is used as a buffer for treating tissue and storing tissue so it does not break down especially under sectioning. Tissue releated to connective tissue without a calcium in the tissue itself. Teeth in particular take a lot to break down. Also formalin

I think the 10% bleach solution should work for you make sure its 10% hate to see your collected teeth degrading on yah. Also bleach is easier to find, where as buffered formalin is usually found in a lab. Might be a little harder to find, but if you have access to a lab go for it.

my 2 cents from a lab prospective. What we use in the lab that i work in.

go to a ice hockey game your sure to find teeth🙂

I have been collecting teeth for Temple. I found that the best place around here is a place that does cheap dentures. I left a jar there for a week and got about a fourth of it filled. Now things are going a little slower.

Formalin, diluted bleach...

Let me add mouthwash to the list. That's what we use here at my dental school to store extracted teeth and it works very well-- No carcinogenic potential like formalin, and no spill hazard like bleach.

HTH!

what type of tooth is most needed? Or do you need just all types? What about wisdom teeth? Do dental students usually work on wisdom teeth?

Thanks everyone for you input so far!

Although the most common teeth you'll find are wisdom teeth, my dental school told us we won't need as much. They told us that the most common once are the first molars. Both maxillary and mandibular. I just got the letter, so I don't have actual experience per se.
