just curious..........are people who do combined programs such as: IM/EM, ped/IM etc...competetive for fellowships in either specialty?

for example, if someone does an IM/EM combined residency then is that individual capable of applying to IM fellowships like cardio, hem/onc, GI etc...and if so, are they as competitive as someone who just did IM only?

thanks

Capable, yes. You will be double board certified and are able to persue any fellowships associated with those boards.

Competitive depends on the how well you do in either respective field, which place you matched into, who you know, and any research done while a resident, etc. Having said that, most people in combined programs do not continue on to fellowship.
