I have taken step II and came up short, always below average on "understanding scientific mechanisms". Anybody know what exactly this is and how would you recommend I prepare for this part of the test?

You might consider reviewing basic Physiology and Pathophysiology (review books, not texts)--The Lange series is good, as is Costanzo's BRS and BRS Q&A book (the latter books can be found on Lippincott's website at www.lww.com, keyword Costanzo).

Another thing I did before step II was to go though your step I review materials. COMLEX likes to put basic science questions scattered throughout the stepII exam, and perhaps this might not only give you some additional questions but also lay the foundation for understanding the clinical aspects of step II.

best of luck
