I'm looking ahead trying to plan my 4th year with Step 2 dates/vacation dates, etc. and hoping to avoid common interview days of the week (if there is such a thing). For example, is it rare for programs to interview on Mondays?

Thanks

The most common day by far is Friday. (I did have some interviews on Thurs, Sat and Mon, but no other days). Most interviews took place mid Nov. through Mid Dec. A few scattered before, in early Nov/Late Oct. Most interview offers came in early Nov. and late Oct.
Try to have your application in by late August.
Regarding TY years/medicine year, try and schedule them in Jan and early Feb, when you might know where you are going for Ophtho.
Hope this helps.

Many programs interview on Mondays, the interview days really vary widely from program to program. Often times programs will also contact applicants with really short notice to fill cancelled slots. Try as hard as you can to schedule a research elective, vacation, or other electives that you can miss many days of without getting into trouble during November and December. You will thank yourself! You might be able to set up self-study type custom electives if you have faculty support. If you are short on credits, you may consider doing electives during the xmas-new year's break when you are guaranteed to have no interviews. Your ability to attend interviews should have priority over any 4th year curricular obligations- it seems that most professors are exceptionally understanding of this necessity.

Also important to note that the first two weeks of December are BY FAR the most popular for ophtho interviews... So if you were going to schedule 2 weeks off, those would make the most sense... I think about 19 diff. programs held interviews on Dec 9 last year 🙂
