If you know you are interested in a competitive residency (e.g. radiology), is research essentially required for consideration?

If it's possible without research, what's the minimally acceptable applicant profile?

Research is not required by any means. That isnt to say it wont help you. Most high tier applicants will have some research to help buff up their portfolio. That being said if you are strong in other things (community service etc.) you may not need research to be competitive.
