Is a computer recommended for the first year curriculum? With what specs? For what applications?
I don't think it ever hurts to have a computer. Whether or not it is CRITICAL that you have one depends on the school you're attending. Some schools allow you to hook up to their netweork in the classrooms so having a laptop can be great. If that's not the case and notes are still taken by hand, it may not be absolutely necessary, though I still think it would come in handy eventually.
