This is a big concern of mine that's holding me back from being fully convinced that dentistry is for me. I have terrible hand skills basically. My hands shake naturally, especially when I'm grabbing something tightly, and when I've been assisting dentists, I couldn't keep my hands still when I was helping with the suctioning - if it was for a long period of time I had to rest my elbows on the armrest of the chair. I've had this problem of my hands shaking since I was a kid and I really wonder if I'll have the skills needed to become a dentist. Can anyone give any advice on this?

Might want to ask your physician to check your thyroid hormone levels. An overactive thyroid can cause tremors on your hands. Yes, thyroid problems can happen in children as well as adults.

Hand skill are very important.... but have your problem checked out... I agree it may be thyroid,,, or any of many problems...

I was an excellent in art work in from grads 7-10... then stopped... have painted recently,,,, carved an anatomy correct head.... but now... with administration and pathology.... rarely use my "hands" except for exams.

good luck

You need to have this checked before considering applying to DS. It is not the skill that you have or don't. It is the underlying problem that needs to be diagnosed. DP
