I'm confused. I know that US med schools (DO? not sure) and Candian med schools are LCME.

Do US applicants tend apply to canadian schools as "back ups" to US MD schools. I'm sorry. Im just confused. 😳

Backup implies that it is easier. Well, I have news for them: it is probably more difficult to get into a Canadian then an American. A lot of Canadians use American schools as backup in fact and once they get into a Canadian universities in mid may (sucks...it isnt rolling) they drop their American offers.

For the unfortunate ones like me -who have a solid MCAT and GPA but not good enough for Canadian schools- land of oppurtunity awaits me in America 👍 😀🙂

have you seen our president?

maybe a fraction of "americans" applying have dual citizenship, family ties to canada, or speak fluent french.

sonyvaio is right. If you can get in to a Canadian medical school, you'll have no problem getting in to dozens of US allo schools.

And if I'm not mistaken, UofT and McGill are the only Canadian schools that are realistic possibilities for Americans anyway.

There are 17 medicals schools coast to coast in Canada, 3 of which are french. I would say that Canadian medical schools are amongst the hardest to get into. The average GPA required is a 3.8.

I would say the only schools that probably accept U.S. applicants in a relatively substantial number (10 or so)...would be McGill and Toronto.

Please pass the message along that Canadian schools are NOT BACKUP!!!.....maybe people are mixing up Canadian with Carribean.

My decision to apply was just about the reverse of a "backup". I applied because there are just so many problems with our American system that I really wanted to see a system of universal insurance in person.

Um, what is this implication that all of Canada is French? The only place where you would even want to know French is Quebec. The rest of Canada is fairly anglophone except for a few pockets that are irrelevant for med school.

what you will see in person is the universal propensity for human beings to complain. In quebec, patients bitch about the long waits/doctor shortage and physicians bitch about the low salaries. In the states, patients bitch about the cost/insurance companies and physicians bitch about malpractice. There are problems everywhere, they are just different...

I agree that the land of opportunity is the United States and not Canada. As a Canadian accepted in the States, I can say American schools welcomed me with open arms (one suggested I tack on a Phd to the MD while I was at it), while all Canadian schools I applied to declined to even interview me.
