i was just curious what/if the minimum MCAT score was to get a letter from a school you didn't apply to asking you to apply there, I got a 33 and have got letters from....

Michigan
University of Texas Medical Branch
and one outwest I can't remember, said something about being a jesuit school though.

I think they all have different min. MCAT requirement. Some schools will send letter out to everyone who has gotten a 30 and some higher.

Hi there,
Do remember that these types of letters generate loads of income from secondary application fees too. Just beware unless you have loads of disposable income.

I think it's funny that they're inviting us to apply, but not really providing any incentive to do so. When I took the LSAT these score-based letters at least offered to let me apply for free.

Oh, i meant to ask if you guys could list what schools you got them from and what you scores were to try and figure out what/if the minimum was. And believe me I'm not going to apply to any of those schools, except michigan to which I had already applied b4 i got the letter. I don't think they'd mail those out just to get secondary fee though, if you were going to mail those out you'd probably want to attract the better applicants not just all applicants.

Why not? The cash is still green unless you're from Canada.

That's exactly what they want you to think. Why wouldn't they want all applicants? The more people that apply, the more money they make.

I know a guy who got a 24 on the mcat and he is gotten a few of these invitations. I don't know which schools, but clearly this is just a way to make money. Schools know if they send applicants a letter that mentions what a great mcat score they made, they may be flattered enough to waste their money applying there lol.

I got letters from UTMB and Wash U. I got an e-mail invite from another - can't remember for sure which one it was but I want to say it was in Virginia maybe.

I got a 37 on the MCAT.

EDIT: It was Wisconsin not Virginia. Just a little different. ;) The poster below me made me remember it.

For those of us with average scores, it kinda hurts to get it from the big wigs, i.e. Michigan...

Wash U and U Mich so far. Guess Wisconsin must be on the way

There are a couple of schools that I might actually apply to if they send something, but only because I was all ready considering them. So if each school that is sending e-mails manages to reach someone like that, a fence-sitter, then it is totally worth it for them.

The first time I took the MCAT, my mail consisted primarily of post-bacc and nursing school crap. The second time I took it I got a whole lotta stuff from WashU, Penn, etc. This makes me think that there is some ~32 ish cutoff.

You guys rock. After my MCAT, I started getting emails from schools saying "Congrats on your MCAT score, but please don't apply to university of ________!"

Weird...

Beware of those letters from medical schools. They may have a 2.5 GPA minimum to get a secondary application - but have a 3.8 GPA minimum to actually get an interview which they don't tell you about. It's just their sneaky way of getting people to pay hundreds of dollars to their school in application/secondary application fees.

Wow, I'm feeling like a loser. Got a 35 on the MCAT and only ever got letters (and emails) from Ross!

Guess U.S. schools don't solicit Canadians. ;)

Though they should, because we have so much less chance of being accepted in our home country than you guys have - 30% of Canuck vs. 50% of U.S. applicants get in somewhere every year... Lots of very bright Canadians just don't make the insane cutoffs...

I agree it is just a ploy to make more money. You are a lot more likely to apply if you think they want you.

Just don't let the letter persaude you in any way. If you were going to apply to the school anyway go right ahead. If you weren't, don't.

Quoted for truth. Now, if the school sends you a check for the application fee, then...that changes things. But otherwise, it's basically spam, and it should be treated as such.

I think they are trying to boost their rating by showing a low the ratio of matriculation to applicants. Ofcourse money is another incentive.

Yeah I remember receiving all the stuff about colleges after SATs and it was just a bunch of useless crap that didn't really tell me anything. I know I've received some of these but I've trashed all of them and haven't really paid much attention - its just junkmail. You take the MCAT and you get put on a mailing list - its just the way it is.

Measuring your worth by how much junkmail you get from medical schools is pretty useless.
