I don't think you can consolidate private loans.

It is very rare that a company will let you consolidate prvt loans. I may have heard anecdotally of one such instance. It behooves you therefore to pay these off first when you finish residency. I wouldnt even invest heavily before paying these off (i.e. no minimum payment here!)

All of us that have prvt loans are in the same boat there. With rates going up it will only get worse.

wow fellas. those rates are pretty high.

to the OP. Someone on this forum suggested this website: www.graduateleverage.com

They apparently had great success with it. I havent got my 'quote' from them yet, but it seems like they're a pretty reputable bunch. Give them a call . Talk about customer service..seriously they had it together. I'm not certain if they do private loans, I guess it doesnt hurt for you to ask them.

good luck!

You can try and get a home equity line of credit and pay them off once you graduate. Some HE lines are very expensive, but others aren't that bad, just make sure you shop around.

Good luck! I have them too 😱

Though it seems that we can't consolidate our private loans, but we can DEFER them right???!! Cause there's no way I can even pay the interest on them during residency (I have a lot). Someone please tell me I can defer my private loans!

You could try borrowing more unsubsidized stafford loan money, and using it to pay off these higher loans.

Graduate Leverage just started offering a private loan consolidation option. It still allows for deferral and can get your rates down somewhat. The rates are still variable, but it ends up being lower than what you borrowed at. They have been awesome for federal consolidation and so far they seem incredibly helpful with private loans too (my husband has 6 separate ones and we just can't keep up with them all).
