Hey guys,

I am currently a first yr, and Im pretty sure I want to focus on cosmetics, while continuing to be a general dentist. I was thinking of working with a cosmetic dentsit over the summer, or even volunteering. Any input on that, or something else you would recommend for the summer? I really dont want to do research, so I am trying to find a strong alternative...what have you guys done in the past?

Also, if I want to practice in Florida for instance, would it be more advantageous if I look for opps. down there this summer?

Any kind of advice would be greatly appreciated guys...thanks guys

Any dentist can put up a sign that they are a cosmetic dentist. There is no specialty recognized as "Cosmetic Dentistry" - and pretty much every general dentist does dentistry that involves cosmetics. That being said, until you have had some clinical experience, I dont belive that you will gain much in the realm of cosmetics by assisting a dentist. You might learn other valuble things, but not much that will make you a better cosmetic dentist.

To add to the OPs question (and to bring up a topic that isn't common around here), what benefits do cosmetic "institutes" (like the Las Vegas Institute) afford participants?

Don't go shadow a cosmetic dentist b/c for all you know they could be joe-shmo pretending to have all this advanced knowledge that they don't really have. Everyone says they are cosmetic dentists but how many have gone to specific CE in costmetic dentistry like spears, kois, dawson etc.

In terms of what LVI offers is a theory on neuromuscular occlusion that has been debated like every other occlusal theory. LVI will teach you how to do veneers their way and then try and get you in to the full mouth rehab stuff.
