I'm filling out the AMCAS 2003 Post-Secondary Experiences... I have made faculty honors/dean's list every semester, so should i list them individually, or just do it all at once. the reason i ask is b/c when i select Honors/Awards/Recognitions, it puts N/A in the boxes where i could do a range of dates.

The other thing is for anyone who has had publications... how do you know if you are first author, second author, etc. I am about to have a paper published and my name will be on the front page with my advisor and the principal investigator.. so i am assuming these are considered "first author."

OK, here's my take:

I'd say list all your dean's list awards together. Listing them individually could make you look like you're grabbing for more glory than you're due. Besides, its really the same award, just repeated.

As for your publication, do NOT assume you are first author. The first author on a paper is the first person's name that appears in the list of authors on the front page. This position generally recognizes the person who has done the most work on the project. There can only be ONE first author. Everyone else is a co-author. I'd say ask your PI or advisor who is actually first author on the paper.

What?! I never listed my Dean's Lists! Oops! That's what happens when you apply w/o SDN 🙁

Anyway, I don't think it's a big deal...if your gpa is high, it's pretty obvious, so if you have to list them, just list them as one "event" and describe it in the section given. 🙂

thanks Monkeyrunner ill email my PI and get his take on it

Hey Techman,
I was in a similar situation regarding both your questions. Here's what i learned after reading the literature on apps etc--

Deans awards, and similar honors that you have received more than once go ON THE SAME LINE as per the application instructions.

As for papers--you list each paper, with authors in the SAME SEQUENCE as appears on the paper. All the authors are listed under the title of the paper which is obviously on the first page of that paper. If you have been listed in the very end of the paper, it's most likely an acknowledgement (you would know if you're acknowledged; most papers have a separate "Acknowledgement" section at the end).

Hope this helps. PM me if you have any more Q's.

I'm pretty sure you just list dean's list once and then in the explanation write down that you got it x number of semesters.

on another, somewhat related topic, has anyone found that when you try to say something you're doing now will end in Sept. 2003 (since AMCAS says to put an expected end date) that you get an error?? is it just me??

one more question - if you work full time, which means you're supposed to work 40hrs/wk but you really work more (50-60 - like most salaried people 😡 ) do you just put in 40 hrs or what you really work? (since there's not really any way to prove it).

Thanks everyone!! I'm so glad to have SDN now!! 🙂
