So I'm couples matching and my sig. other is going into Peds (me: into IM). I was wondering:

1) Is it possible that she match at program A (our #1) and I at program B (our #2) if I didn't match into program A, or would we both match at program B (if they ranked her as well)?

2) If program A wanted my sig other badly, would that necessarily help my chances of getting ranked at that program?

3) Let's say that I didn't match anywhere (eek!) and she did. Would I be notified of the program that she matched at so that when I scramble, I would know geographically where to invest my effort?

Thanks for the advice. Good luck with the Match!

My understanding is that you can only match at the combination you place e.g.

you sig other
A A
B B
B A

So if you didnt match into program A then it moves to next row/option program B for the both of you. If your sig other didnt get prog B and you did then it moves to the next row/option until it fulfills both etc.

As for your second question, Ive heard that if the program really likes your sig other, prog directors may talk. However, the amount of movement may not be large. If the program divides their applicants into quartiles, and you are in the second quartile, they may move you up some slots but you will still be in the second quartile.

Third question: I have the same question too because im couples matching as well and am unsure if my letter will have my sig others match result on match day.

I'm couples matching this year as well but I've read the answers to some of these on SDN.

If she matches but you don't you can contact NRMP and find out what city your significant other matched to.

At WashU they seemed to indicate that they try to rank both of you as a couple. I took that to mean that if they like one of you a lot they might rank the other one higher. I don't think the converse should be true because if they really dislike someone all they have to do is not rank one person and the couple won't match there.

This is something you guys can determine yourselves. If you set up your rank list like this:
Her: 1. A You: 1. A
Her: 2. A You: 2. B
Her: 3. B You: 3. B

Then if she matches at A and you don't match at A but instead at B then she will match at A and you will match at B. This is what a match list might look like if programs are located in the same city.

If instead your ranking looks like this:

Her: 1. A You: 1. A
Her: 2. B You: 2. B
Her: 3. C You: 3. C

Then if one or both of you don't match at A the computer will then try to match you together at B and so on.
