hi everyone,

i was wondering if anyone has info about the couples match - any experiences you are willing to share? me and my fiance are entering as a couple for internal medicine this year and are pretty nervous about it. :scared:

any advice would be helpful at this point.

thanks so much!

no personal experience with it, but considering that there are tons of IM spots, there shouldn't be too much of a problem coordinating your matches. good luck.

You have probably done this, but be sure to very carefully read the information on the NRMP website. I think it describes things pretty well. http://www.nrmp.org/res_match/special_part/us_seniors/couples.html

I went through the couples match in internal medicine and my wife in pediatrics. It worked very well, our match list ended up being something like 80 spots long (with all the combinations and permutations) and we probably would have been happy with the top 15 or so combinations. Internal med x2 should be no problem if you are both reasonably decent candidates and are willing to look in geographical locations with multiple programs. Keep in mind that you don't have to go to the same program.

Also make sure the programs know that you are couples matching, many will be willing to make speical arrangements so you can interview on the same day, or when your SO is interviewing at another institution in town, etc.

Good luck, let me know if you have specific questions.

agree with mc.

my wife and i couples matched in radiation oncology and anesthesiology.
medicine x2 shoule be a little easier as you won't need to coordinate between different departments at the same institution. be prepared to re-think certain programs/locations as your sig other loves/hates places you've already seen. 'tis the season for compromise... 🙂

hang in there. you'll be fine.
