I got a packet from UB today with all of the health and financial aid forms, and I learn from the cover letter that I need to be CPR certified before I start classes. Granted, I'm a little embarassed to admit that I have not taken a course yet, but I was just curious as to whether or not this was something that was universally required.

I would have to guess that this is more the exception than the rule. We have a BLS (Basic Life Support) that 6 hours long that first years take to become basic CPR certified. In second year you take ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support). When I applied to schools I know that certification came once you were in the class b/c they want to make sure that everyone is certified for "The Health Care Provider" and there is a difference btwn the techniques.

So...when you take your class make sure you are certified for The Health Care Provider"

some schools have everyone take it at the same time in the first week of class or so in order for everyone to expire at the same time (thus making recertification much easier). Some schools have you do it on your own.

BTW: Take the American Heart Association Class C (course for professional rescuers).
