The program I ranked #1 is sending a good portion of their graduating class to critical care fellowships. I am curious as to how this works for a solely EM board certified doc? As far as I know they cannot be "boarded" in critical care, or is this wrong? What do these docs do? What are the career options after completing such a fellowship (and who takes them for fellowship training)?

2 of 6 of our current PGY-3s are going to CC fellowships next year. As I understand it, they are both planning on taking the European CC boards after 2 years of fellowship (one clinical, one research). As for employment, both seem to feel that the shortage of US boarded CC specialists coupled with their experience and fellowship training will leave them in a good position in the job market.

Per my CCM attending "I'd hire you in a minute if you did CC fellowship after EM; I don't care whose boards you take." From what I understand, this is the prevailing attitude nowadays, at least in community hospital ICU's.
