I would really appreciate some advice on this. I have just graduated medical school, and matched at JH for PGY-2 year/2005. My fiancee is currently applying to medical school and she is obviously limited to only 4 schools (2 in MD and 2 in DC) with JH being her 1st choice. She has pretty strong stats: 3.88, 34Q, good letters etc. DO you guys think I should contact medical school admissions at JH and let them know of our situation? Or should we just take our chances with the admission process? If the answer to the first q is yes, what should the timing be like (contacting them now as opposed to mid-July when they begin looking at apps)?

Thanks in advance,

I think one of you should tell someone in the admissions office. As for which one of you and when, I don?t really know the best way to go. I think it would be better if she told them herself, and described it as one of many reasons that Hopkins is her first choice. If there is a space in the secondary for her to include "additional comments," then she could tell them there.

Thanks for advice. When do they start looking at apps? She just got her MCAT score yesterday; should we submit that on-line 2ndary ASAP or can we take some time?

I'd talk with Dean White in the admissions office. He should be aware of your situation, and even if he keeps a poker face, I'm sure your fiancee's application will be taken very seriously.

If I'm not mistaken, applications are reviewed on a rolling basis as soon as they are complete. I'd suggest filling out the secondary ASAP, as the first interviews usually take place in early September.

What department will you join at Hopkins? I'll start rads at JHH in '05.

Cheers,

Hey Doepug,

Thanks for the reply! I will be starting Ophtho in '05. I am sure I'll be seeing a lot of you, especially for those middle-of-the-night orbital fx CTs 😀 !

I think you are correct; I probably should contact Dean White. Could you PM me his e-mail address if you know it or have access to it? I tried looking on JH website, but I think you need access for that.

Again, I really appreciate your help.

With her numbers, I'd definitely say talk to the dean. She'd have a good chance of getting in anyway in my humble opinion. Congrats on matching in optho - may your children be able to see read from 50 yards someday.

I am in a similar situation with me being an incoming first year and my fiancee applying this year. We talked to Dean White during revisit weekend and he said that they consider it, but made no promises. He said that they haven't admitted an early decision applicant in the last 10 years or something, and seemed to indicate not to apply early.

In any case, my fiancee also has an excellent application, but I'd hate for her to be overlooked just randomly. I'm planning to contact Dean White again when I start school, but I wouldn't push him too much, he's a busy man.

Best of luck!

Hey JR -

Dean White's e-mail address isn't listed in the university directory. I'd try calling the admissions office to chat on the phone or set up an appointment. Be sure to clarify that you're Wilmer housestaff so the office staff doesn't blow you off.

Good luck! See you soon.
