My PI just told me that this year Sinai will be increasing its class size by roughly 20. Apparently she said that this decision was due to a physician shortage.

that decision was due to $$ shortage

A physician shortage? In NY? Haha, that's a joke, right?

WoW!! What great news! Thanks for sharing. :)

How much extra money can they really make from increasing their class size by 20, though? I'm thinking maybe $500K/year max? That's chump change. Lunch money to be more precise. Especially when compared to how much money they rake in from actually treating patients.

Actually during my MSTP interview they said that they will only do it if there is an "across-the board" student increase in the nation -- because since 9/11 I think they are going to put a lock on accepting more FMGs. If not they won't increase the class size.

What is FMG?

FMG = foreign medical graduate

I know that because I am about to send in my application to St. George's

Well it's good for us

hey E'01, have you heard anything from sinai yet? do you know when we hear? since we interviewed together, i can imagine that we would be hearing at around the same time.

let me know if you hear anything.

Hi Choker - no not a word from them yet. It's still early. I'll probably wait until a month has pass before I give them a call.

oldman, I sent you a PM

Hey Choker when did you interview???

When I interviewed I was told that the class size of 105 was increasing to 120 next year because there is no longer a overflow of physcians. I also don't believe the increase of class size is due to money shortage, Sinai is a very wealthy institution.

i interviewed with E'01 on jan. 30, exactly 2 weeks ago.

I interviewed on feb 5, did they tell you when they would send acceptance or rejection letters.

Well folks - particularly Choker- I just came back from lecture and happen to run into 2 people from the admissions committee. They asked me when I interviewed (2 weeks ago) and then they told me that they're meeting today from 4-6 to talk about applicants.

oh ****!

wow, so did they say that they were talking about applicants in general or did they specify people that interviewed OUR day? also, do you know how they are going to notify us? the office said email, but everyone i know that's gotten is was notified by mail.

argh!!!

stanford tonight, nyu tomorrow, columbia tomorrow, and sinai tonight!!!!

WOW im totally flipping out!!!
i would kill to get into ANY of them!!!!

argh GOD PLEASE JUST ONE!!!!

Noooooo we won't get decisions regarding Sinai today. They're just meeting. One doc asked me when did I interview, and I told him 2 weeks ago, then he said "ahh ok, you're ears will be buring from 4-6pm today since we'll be meeting and going over your application". So I just assumed that they'd be discussing everyone that interviewed on our day. They did not say how we'll be notified.

I just got of the phone with admissions and they said that a batch of final decision letters will be sent soon. SOrry I can't be more specific. But I had called to ask when I would hear (I interviewed at the end of Jan) and she said that November interviewees have yet to hear of a final decision. So I assume you guys should be hearing shortly.

MSSM seems to be going sooooo slow this year.

after being rejected from nyu and getting waitlisted at stanford and columbia (all this week), i am in what many may refer to as a deep and bottomless "pit of despair." right now, while i still have a shot, the only school that hasn't snubbed me in some form or another is (besides cornell and harvard, which both aint happenin') sinai.

i need sinai bad. real real real bad. i really liked the school when i visited and am really going nuts waiting to hear from sinai is basically my last bastian of hope right now.

sigh.

Choker-
What the hell is your quote from? Its driving me crazy. peace

E'01, so did they say anything about the possibility of OUR interview group being notified within this next batch?

I wish Choker :( No -she just said, "they don't tell us that information" and then she went on about how they are backed up and have to deal with the November people.

E'01 - whom did you talk to? I've had little to no success calling that office. I always receive succinct responses that tell me next to nothing. I interviewed in early november, and mount sinai is one of my top choices. i just wish i would be one of theirs...

Choker-
Man do I feel your pain...just rejected (and I'm really not conceited or arrogant, but this was a major surprise) from NYU, i've been waitlisted at a bunch others but I am still waiting on Columbia and Sinai--though I suspect quite strongly that my Columbia waitlist notification will be in my mailbox this afternoon. :(

This is so depressing...this isn't how things we're supposed to have played out...

BTW, I interviewd in mid-october at Sinai and still nothing!

HEy solarmac8 - hang in there :) I don't know who here name was but I got a pleasant yet somewhat flustered sounding lady on the line. Sorry I can't be more specific. But basically, she said that there are so many applicants and they are backed up.

i called this morning and a very very pleasant woman answered and offered to tell me if my file was still under consideration. after flirtatiously accusing me of just calling several minutes earlier and pestering her (which i didn't), she informed me that no decision has been made on my file.

-hey, you guys should call and see what's up.

especially E'01. i am a little concerned because you said that they met to discuss us last week.
Eckie (sorry i cant spell your name), see if they made a decision on your file.

Does anyone know when Sinai will send their next batch of acceptance letters???

I was interviewed in sept. and still haven't heard from them!! i called today. she said i should hear by the end of this month (in the next 10 days). i suppose i'll get waitlisted (otherwise why would they have waited for sooooo long)

Anyone here got into Mt Sinai?

I'm too scared to call. Plus, it was only last week that I spoke to them - I doubt they've done much since.

E01,

You still considering aecom? I remember reading a thread somewhere where you spoke about possibly deciding on aecom. It is a possibility for me, so just wanted to see who else was in my boat. Good luck with Sinai :)

Hi Souljah1 - Right now I'm all geared towards going to Einstein - even over Sinai if I were miraculously were to be accepted. I'm just waiting to hear post-interview from Cornell - I would go there in an heartbeat! How about yourself? Where do you see yourself going?

Anyone here really set on going to Sinai if accepted?? I know I am, well... if accepted.

E'01, why Einstein over Sinai??

vblam this is going to sound so superficial but, at Einstein I can get my own place whereas at Sinai you have to live in their dorms which have suites of 4 or 6 people. Also, I work at Sinai, and the novelty has completely worn off - I want a change. Those are very bad reasons I know - I also really don't want to get my hopes up and even think I'll get in (like how I thought I actually had a chance at Columbia) - so I'm just trying to focus my mind on attending Einstein...for now.

E'01, since you work in Sinai. I have question for you. Do you think the financial situation that Sinai is in has affected the institution overall???

vblam it certainly has. The hospital had a consulting group (Hunter) come in last winter to assess the situation. Many positions were cut (I thankfully was okay since my position is grant-funded). Basically, Hunter went around and decided what department should be cut or left alone. The hospital is in debt badly - they recently just hired a CEO (they actually didn't have one beforehand) and they have been trying to rebuild their reputation by increasing their publicity (new ads, the 100th commemoration ceremony etc). As for the medical school, I asked my interviewer how the budget would affect the medical school and she sort of got all defensive about it. But basically, no one really knows off course what the short or long-term consequences will be. As far as I know, the tuition will be rising each year and the clas size will now be increased to 120 - I'm assuming because of Sinai's financial crisis. In defense of Sinai I've heard people (particularly the admissions people) that every hospital goes through this. I don't think so. No other school I've interviewed at seems to be experiencing such a financial crisis. That's another factor that has me a litle wary of the school - the instability and not knowing of what is going to happen next.

Hi,

I go to St. George's and our dean just met with Mt. Sinai's dean, and Mt. Sinai is going to take 15 transfers to increase their class size....so there is part of your increase in class. Any questions? :D

I should of applied to St. George since I'd have a better chance there - then transferred to Sinai. Thats if they were my top choice. Gosh darn it.

St. Georges? Where's that?

It's a caribbean school on the island of grenada

IWSMD, could you please send me a PM regarding St. George and what you think of it, how well prepared you feel, what are the transfer options and what percentage is able to transfer on an average year, etc, etc. i tried to PM you, but didn't see that option available. please contact me! :)

i just met dr. kayne, dir. admissions at sinai at a med school fair at my school (along with the heads of admissions at duke, columbia, cornell, einstein, northwestern, dartmouth, stonybrook, downstate, air force, navy, and a few others) and he told me some interesting things about the financial problems.

first, no rejections or waitlists have gone out
second, acceptances have been going out rolling since january, and he can't say when to expect a decision
third, the financial problems are big, but no bigger than those of stanford/penn, which he said were much worse. he said that they are cutting some programs that "dont aid us in our long term goals" and tuition would go up, and financial aid would not be as generous. that being said, sinai will no longer be the cheapest private medical school. he said that the task force that was hired to make the adjustments would submit their report this week and as soon as Sinai knew what they were doing, they were going to inform all accepted students of the changes.

also, class WILL go from 105-> 120, but he said that the class USED to be around 115, so the school was ready for them.

really nice guy with a great handshake.
