Hi all,
Did anyone have ever got a D or F in science courses and still accepted in US allopathic schools? I got a D in freshman chemistry and I hope if anyone can share some light to the struggling situation like mine. Thanks.

no, but i did get a D in english 101 my freshman year. needless to say, i did take retake it my senior year and got an A and got accepted to a US allopathic school.

I also got a D in Freshman/Gen. Chemistry, retook it as a senior and got an A. Have been accepted to U.S. Allopathic Schools. I actually used the bad grade as a "learning experience" in interviews... won't be a problem if you can show that you learned from it and obtained decent grades afterward.

I'm retaking a class right now that I got a D in 2 quarters ago...the sad thing is, I don't know if I'll get an A in that class. Now, isn't it possible to petition to have ONE grade taken off your record so that it seems as if it didn't exist? I have a pretty good record and that D is just screwing me up big-time...I've heard of schools having something called "freshman leniency"...

Listen, I got 2 F's, 3 D's, and a mass of W's in my early college career (many of them sciences) and I have gotten into 2 allopathic schools and 3 osteopathic schools. It's impossible to erase your past but it's not impossible to improve based on what you learned from those experiences, and thats what I did. It's been over 5 years since I got those grades and I had to do post-bacc work, graduate work, etc. to show my determination and abilities. It worked. And once I felt I was ready to apply, I did. I retook some of those courses and have consistently continued an upward trend. Good luck to you.

i had a D in physics, and one W. only one school asked me about it, and since i had retaken it and gotten an A i was able to write it off as youthful indiscretion 🙂 and they seemed happy with that

No worries. 😎
One grade will not make or break you for the most part, although a few bad grades might mean you have to work a little harder at other points of your app. I got a D in Orgo I and had to retake it over the summer (got an A second time), had a C in Orgo II, and a couple of W's. But I had a good cum GPA, good ECs and MCATs, so I still had 6 interviews with 2 Accs, 2 WLs, and the other 2 I am waiting to hear from - this is my first time applying.
That being said, be prepared to answer questions about your grades in interviews - they WILL give you crap about it... Some of my interviewers were impressed that I retook orgo and did well - bear in mind that most people have failed at something at least once in their life - they like to see that you don't give up that easily, and also that you can admit that there are some things you aren't good at. Not that there are, it just helps to pretend to be humble (j/k) 😛

Anyone ever get a D in a course and NOT retake it? Mine is a D in Calc II which I took my first quarter of my freshman year. I had a B in Calc I.

Crystal - I wouldn't worry too much about that grade then. Calc II isn't required for most medical schools (in fact the only one I know of for sure is Duke, but I'm sure there's a few others too). I haven't applied yet, but I would think that if they really considered it a deficiency in your case you could always retake it. I'd apply with that D and see what happens....in general one grade is not going to make or break you.

Good luck!

So, what if you get a B the second time around? I'm trying really hard to get an A, but getting a B is certainly a possibility...it's just that this particular course is extremely hard for me. I thought math was my weak point but I aced calculus...physics is a WHOLE other story. Would adcoms be okay with it (getting a B second time around) so long as I admit that I'm absolutely terrible at it?

BTW beboo, sorry to ask so many questions in your thread...😉

Thanks for the advice. I put so much time and effort into that stupid D. 🙁 I'm not even sure I would get an A or B if I retook it. Hopefully it won't matter too much.

I guess my logic is, better to make it seem as though I was a brand new college freshman adjusting to college life rather than get a D first time and a C upon retake, making it glaringly obvious I'm just awful at Calculus!

Crystal check ur pm's!

Gotcha!
Oops, sent that reply out in the midst of typing it without realizing it. 🙂

i got a D in physics 2 while in college. i retook the class last spring and got a B+ in lecture and an A- in lab. i was accepted into 4 US allopathic schools. i think retaking the course showed adcoms that i was committed to doing well, plus it was something to discuss during interviews. so i guess what i am saying is don't give up..just retake the class and try to do well..

Good luck!

Thank you all so much for your share of thoughts!
I really thought I had a snowball chance in hell to go to med school after that D; you guys have lightened my hope. And I hope more SDNers ask more questions (or help) in improving their performance.

Hey, Carbon, I got you --- wish you a great medical career!🙂

xaeila: what track were you in when you were a symbolic system major? (neuro?) It is impressive to see how you improve your 3.0 undergrad GPA.

As a non-traditional applicant(I am 28), I was surprised by how much my poor grades in undergrad did not matter. I majored in Latin American History and Anthropology. As a senior I received an "F" in "Introduction to Latin American Anthropology" With a number of C's and a D, I squeaked out a 3.1 cum.

After I graduated, I took a bunch of classes at Com. Colleges(all A's) and worked in public health. I was lucky to do some interesting volunteer/public health work domestically. I had a decent MCAT(33).

As a white male with no connections or hidden factors I was accepted to Harvard, UMICH, and UCSF among others.

Granted, it can take awhile,(I graduated in 1996), but one can **** up pretty good, be patient, get good grades, do good work and go just about anywhere.

What if that F is in your last year??
And all your other courses are high B's or A's...and then one outlier...
I'm worried about a metabolism class i took this semester. It was absolutely horrid. The professor refused to provide help and didn't have any specific text book...

What if i fail...will any med schools, or other masters programs want me? 😕 🙁

Ps: I've never failed anything before..

I got an F freshman year and got accepted to a top 25 allopathic school and all of the schools in my state so far. Don't sweat it. Just work really hard to make up and show that it was a fluke. Most schools don't care about one bad grade, especially if it was freshman year, when we were all dumb and prone to err.

hmmmmmmmmm......... interesting....... in U of Toronto and most Canadian Universities one can't retake courses they passed... so even if you get D- in say... Orgo..... you're stuck with that grade, you're NOT allowed to retake a course UNLESS you completely failed it! You can't even take it an another university..... and there arn't any pass/fail options either...... just grades...

interesting......

Thanks everyone for replying to this thread. I too am making up for some freshman "blips" on my transcript. It seems when I'm on this forum, all I hear is people with suberb GPAs asking which top 20 med school would be the best for them. It's nice to know that there are plenty of people like me out there with "not perfect" GPAs who are getting into medical school!

Thanks again everyone!
