I am in my junior year at the University of Iowa and I am considering applying to COMS in Des Moines, IA. I have a 3.6, and still need to take MCAT. My question, is that I have heard that there are very few D.O.s in the surgical field. Is this a true statement??

Theres no doubt that it will be a little harder to get into surgery, especially an allopathic one. Most osteo schools persuade there students to go into primary care.

Don't let it stop you though. I will most likely pursue some sort of surgery. The key is to do OUTSTANDING on all your boards (USMLE included), but this is true for the allopaths as well. Good luck.

i agree with miglo. just do well on your boards and prove you can do just as well as any allopath. i know a few heart surgeons who are DOs.

Just wondering, what does F.A.C.O.S stand for?
