Hi,

I would like to know more programs in Houston and Dallas (and other parts of TX).

Things I am interested in knowing include
1. # spots
2. fill rates
3. competitiveness
4. lifestyle of the programs
5. strength of the programs to each other as well as to others nationally
6. Job prospects now and in a few years, esp in TX
7. cost of living in Dallas and Houston.

Well, I have asked a lot of questions and I thank you in advance for any answers you can provide. I am doing some research into pathology for someone else.

Well I can speak only to the Dallas programs, sort-of, but there is a recent thread about Houston, so you can check that out if you get no more info in this one. I have spent a month at SW, only interviewed at Baylor.

Baylor and UT Southwestern are in Dallas. Your questions:

1. # Spots (this year): UT SW- 8AP/CP, 2 CP; Baylor 4
2. Fill rates: UT SW filled; Baylor 3 of 4
3. Competitiveness: Probably Baylor less than SW, but neither are as competitive as the "power-programs" I'm sure. Difficult to guage (for me, maybe someone else can do a better job)
4. Lifestyle: Hmmmm.... can speak more to UTSW
UTSW- Surg Path and heme are the two most time-consuming I believe. Both may have hours like 7-7 or 8, depending on your speed and time spent previewing cases (in surg path). There is no call 1st year. Overall, it's manageable, but of course stressful at times. Residents seem mostly eager and happy overall, willing to work hard and not complain. Many lectures/conferences-Great series of AP and CP lectures, but there are a lot.
Baylor- Well when I interviewed a 3rd yr resident said she had never stayed past 5:15. Wow. Draw your own conclusions. It depends on what you're looking for I guess. Very nice facilities, private institution. There is a paucity of didactics, so if that's your thing, beware. There is a greater pressure to turn cases around quickly, so residents don't always get to preview cases.
5. Strength of programs: OPINION - Southwestern is probably stronger overall. Someone else may be able to answer this more fully.
6. Job prospects - can't speak to that
7. Cost of living in Dallas - not bad compared to other cites. Houston? Don't know.

Ask if you have more questions. Hopefully someone else can give you insight into programs elsewhere in the state.
