dartmouth 2007

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm going to Dartmouth... maybe. My heart says go to Dartmouth, but my wallet says go to my state school. I'm still waiting to hear about financial aid, and I'm definitely keeping my fingers crossed. If the offer is good, I would love to be in NH next year.

Anyone else out there? What made you decide on Dartmouth?

youch, the call of the wallet, always a reality-check.

good luck with the FA package - I hear Dartmouth gives more than most schools, so hopefully it won't be outrageously expensive!
did you see the rents though? they are HIGH 😱, i was kinda suprised. but i loved the area - gorgeous and lots of snowboarding/skiing - hopefully i won't have to study ALL day so that i can appreciate NH a little!

in your budget, you might consider that NH has the cheapest state liquor store i have EVER seen. just a thought. 😉

again, good luck!!

any new dartmouth 2007ers?

I'm on the wait list. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll get in. Waiting sucks. Especially waiting until days before classes begin in some cases.

So, all of you future Dartmouth MD's should send some positive vibes my way. Who knows? Maybe we'll be future classmates.

Have a good one!

i am now facing south and sending positive vibes your way...

they should work - my positive vibes are quite effective.

good luck!! hope you don't have to wait too long!

dancabmit,

I don't know if it helps at all but I dropped their waitlist today so there's one less person to compete with. I'm always glad to hear when people drop the waitlist I'm on so I thought it might make you happy. I absolutely loved the school but I don't think I can handle the weather. Plus the job market isn't too good in Hanover for my SO. Good luck to you.

Hey there -

Has anyone figured out living arrangements for the Hanover area next fall?

I'm thinking of flying out there at the end of the month to scope out apartments. Anyone have any advice of where to start?

Thanks!!

Yeah, I've been over the listings, but there aren't any pictures!! Besides, I was hoping someone "in the know" might have ideas of places/landlords/areas that I should avoid - or that are really great.

Thanks, though! 🙂

hey ironey - did you get the email from gary hutchins about grad student housing on north park st? you might want to check it out if you end up visiting on your apt search... it seems pretty close to campus and utilities are included. might be cool to be near other students, but then again, a lot of them are four bedrooms, and that might be kinda crowded...
but, just in case - you might put in an application and you'll have a backup plan at least.

good luck

Thanks there SophRI! I didn't get the email, but that seems to happen often . . . my email is hard to spell I guess . . . 🙂

I'm still planning on taking a trip out there at the end of June/early July. I actually need a place for two people, though. My partner will be joining me as soon as he's able to leave his job and I don't think we'd fit in in a house of single students (besides, we're not married so I don't think we qualify for student housing). So I'm probably going to be solo for the first semester; it'll be good for studying, I guess.

Looking forward to meeting everyone in August!

Okay, so my plan is to stay in a cheap Hanover/WRJ motel for a week or so and use that week to DESPERATELY look for housing. Yup, great plan, huh? (.... i'm dead) Maybe we should form an apartment searching team together.

Hah! An appartment appropriation association!! Limited time membership, minimal commitment!

I like my creature comforts too much to just show up and take the first place available. I'll be out there at the first of July - anyone else with the same plans, let me know and we can consolodate searches.

Hey there folks. Thought I'd stick my head in and look around.

For those of you who will be in Hanover next fall, let me tell you:

-Welcome Home-

I'm just getting out of first year myself.
Some notes:

1) some people are lucky and get great fin-aid. We have some institutional funds for loans at really low rates, and they will try to give you as much of that as possible before they give you higher rate government loans. And for lots of people (40% I think?) their are great scholarships- my tuition works out to be just a few thousand a year more then my state school would have been. Well worth it.

2) For housing go to: www.dartmouthre.com real good site. Also try basement.dartmouth.edu (I'm not sure if you need a student id/pass to log on, maybe, maybe-no) -There are lots of bulletins around there of people looking for roomates. And if worse comes to worst, don't worry. A double handfull of my classmates started the first day of orientation w/out a place to live. It will all work out.

3) Dartmouth: I love my classmates man. They put together good classes. My class is very tight, and wer're pretty close to the second (now third) years as well. It's my understanding thats the norm. Of course, some classes bond more then others. Your class will definately become your friends and family here. Thats great, but remember the bad thing is this is a very small social scene. (Not that you'll be doing much in the way of socializing outside the library ;-) Oh, Admins are great too me thinks. Anyways, I wanted Dartmouth because it was small, and I hoped tight knit. -Thats what I got.

Somebody mentioned lack of career choices for their SO - very very true. And of course, lets not forget the winter. (But you can't mention the snow without mentioning the nearest ski way is 20 minutes, owned by the school, and cheap.)

Hey, I don't check out studentdoctor much anymore. If anyone wants to drop me a line, or ask questions email me at: [email protected]

"Somebody mentioned lack of career choices for their SO"

What does SO mean?

SO = significant other

thanks for the info, oneiro!

Oh, I see, so that's what it means.... Need to get myself one of those 🙂

Thanks, sophRI.

The problem with the "SO" designation is that it means different things depending on the circles you run in.

For example, my psychologist friend who works with disturbed teens. SO = Sex Offender.

I don't think you want one of those.

Where are you all planning to live? I applied for the Sachem Villege housing, which is a good deal, but there is a long waitlist apparently. Most likely I'm going to get a 2BR in Lebanon for me and my SO, there seem to be some in the 6-700 dollar range, which is considerably cheaper than Hanover.

Looking forward to August!

Ooh, I'll be in the Hanover area this week: July 15-18. I have no idea where I'm going to live, but I've sent emails to lots of people about adds on the Dartmouth housing website. Where else are people finding housing listings?? Is anyone going to be in town next week, too?

Hey, Jlazy, did Sachem Village allow non-married couples to apply for school housing?? I'd just assumed that they wouldn't give preference to domestic partnerships like they do married couples . . . . what do you think?

August is coming soon . . . . . .
😀

The only other site I found was Valley News Classifieds:

http://www.vnews.com/class/cat-830.htm

Sachem Village: I think SOs and married couples are considered equal, but short-term employees, fellows, families have priority. My guess, not much chance for us anytime soon.

Let me know how your visit went.

I just got back from the upper valley on an aparment search. Although I found a place that I'm really excited about, it was really tough going. Maybe it was bad luck, but you wouldn't believe the "apartments" that I saw. Good Lord!!!

FYI, I called on about 75 apartments from the Dartmouth housing list and over half of them were already rented. I ended up looking farther out of town than I'd hoped and I learned to avoid White River Junction as I saw some real doozies there.

Anyway, if anyone has a roommate set up, I can suggest a really nice place (2-bedroom, 2 full bath house) for a reasonable price that is brand new. I really wanted it, but didn't have a roommate and couldn't afford it on my own. As of yesterday it was still available. If anyone is interested, please PM me and I'll give you the phone number. It's in Wilder which is about 2 miles from Hanover. I did the drive to the medical school and it took about 15 minutes.

Anyway, good luck to everyone!

A couple days ago I got an email from the Dartmouth Real Estate people saying a Sachem Village 2 bedroom was available. Sounds like a good deal, and I'm not going to be able to apartment hunt before school started, so I think I'll take it. Has anybody seen these 2-bedroom Sachem Village places? Are they OK?

I'd go with it, Jlazy. It sucked looking for rentals.

See you all soon!

Sachem village is some of the cheapest housing you can get. if you get into some of the 2 story condos, I'm told their nice. The duplexes are strict econo boxes, but cheap. The shuttle goes to the village and school, I'm told their is free WiFi access all over the neighborhood through the school, I *think* electricity or hot water is free... maybe e-, I might be wrong on that. IF you want plain and cheap, they're a good deal. But you pretty much have to be married to get in. I don't know about dom-partners.

nearby towns: wilder, norwich hartford, white river and west leb, lebanon, lyme in guesstimation order of nearest to farthest.

For comparison: I live in hartford and can be from driveway to parking lot in 10 minutes on most days. (unless you hit morn traffic, which adds 10 mins)
