Hey,

Is anyone out there on SDN planning on doing the MPH program at Dartmouth next year? I am, and I was wondering if anyone else was?

hey can you tell me a little bit more aobut the program..is it accredited????

The last time the Dartmouth MPH program was discussed on here it was somewhat-bashed for not being accredited, but this isn't the case. The program is brand new, last year was the first year they offered the degree. No new graduate program can begin with immediate accreditation. I spoke with the staff at Dartmouth and she said that they are in the process of undergoing accreditation and that Dartmouth has never had any problems before, and they don't intend on having any problems for this program in terms of gaining accreditation. She said it would be finished at the end of this year I think. The program is only 9 months (which I really like) whereas most MPH programs are 2 years. It focuses on outcomes research and clinical evaluative sciences. The class has about 40 -50 students in it, made up of 1/3 docs, 1/3 health professionals (nurses, admin, etc.), and 1/3 pre-meds. I think this makes for a really interesting and enriching mix. Although I am going there, so I suppose I'm a bit biased. Combine that with Dartmouth's reputation and I think its a great place....as long as you like the snow. Hope this helps, Dave

WOW! REALLY? IF I CLICK THERE I CAN MEET CHICKS? Take your dumb language and go waste your time on another board pal.

this was discussed a while back, so you can probably find it if you do a search. i think i may have been the one who brought up accreditation, and all i said about that is that dartmouth does not have asph (associated schools of public health) accreditation. approximately 25 schools in this country have accredited schools of public health, and dartmouth is not one of them. to become accredited, a school must have programs in epi, biostats, maternal & child health, health & social behavior, and health policy & management (or something like that). there's more to becoming accredited than just having those departments/degrees i think, but i don't know the details. whether or not a school is accredited may or may not matter to you. in terms of a future career in public health, i think it's best to go to an accredited school, though dartmouth of course is a reputable school so employers might not care that it's not accredited. i know absolutely nothing about the program other than the fact that it is a 1 year program.

You need to graduate one class in order to become accredited by the ASPH. Dartmouth's first MPH class will graduate in June, at which point the school will be accredited. It has all the components (like epi, social/behavioral health, etc.) in place to acheive this. Anyone else can feel free to PM me with particular questions about the program.

bump

I looked at www.ceph.org and it isn't accredited yet. I'm thinking they probably just haven't updated the website but any info is helpful.
