I am getting really frustrated with these review books. Sometimes I feel like a person with no science background sat down and tried to dumb down the "review concepts" sections of intro textbooks. On that note, I am having major problems with the Barron's book. Especially in the Gen. Chem. section. Its been almost 4 years since my gen chem days so I am in serious need of review and my intro chem book is at my parents house. Major problem today was with quantum numbers. Not really my strong point to begin with. . .So they are talking about Magnetic Quantum number and they say it can be -1, 0 or 1. I'm like "Hmmmm this sounds vaguely familiar. I can handle this". Then they go on to assign whole integers from -3 to 3! I mean WTF? Contradict yourself lately? Can someone help? I'm feeling hopelessly in need of some quantum number expert advice. Anyway moving on to Stoichiometry. . .(Its more my kind of thing!)

dragonfly, I wish I could be of some help...what is the question specifically, or do you just need an overview of quantum numbers? I think Kaplan's DAT book is a good overview of the sciences...

sorry I can't be too much of a help here

Girl,

I feel your pain! When I was reviewing for the DAT, I was getting extremely frustrated! Going back to these Chemistry subjects that I haven't had in YEARS had made me throw the Kaplan DAT book across the room several times!!! Like who cares about quantum numbers and election configuration shi#? At any rate, keep at it and maybe try a different reviewing/reference book that explains it more clearly!?

I have an idea, have you thought about using video tapes? When I studied for my DAT, I used, obviously, review books, but I also used video tapes from STANDARD DEVIANTS (major help/review for Chemistry and Organic) and audio tapes from DAT AUDIOLEARN! Sometimes it's better to see and hear things, ya know, get a visual of things! Good luck and keep at it. Oh yes, one last thing, try throwing your book across the room once or twice, it really helps you to break the tension and you'll get a good laugh at it at the same time!!

Try examkrackers GChm review, its for the mcat but its d'bomb and we can profit from this type of book as well or better than the pre-meds, since the dat is more straight forward about the science than the mcat... I also suggest Examkrackers Audio Osmosis its great for the ride home, at night before going to bed listening to a lecture on sn2 or sn1, e1/e2 all that orgo stuff..give it world I think you'll be happy

I think I'm OK with quantum numbers now. That part of the panic is over. . .gen Chem is still totally sucking ass though.

I was wondering, which do you think is better for the DAT? The Audio Osmosis for the MCAT or the DAT Audiolearn? I just want to get one, but I'm not sure which to go with.

DragonFly9,

The best thing for you to do is get the general idea of that topic for now and move on. Do not stick on one topic and let it ruin your whole day of studying. I think many of us can recall times when that happend to us while studying for the DAT. You can always come back to that topic and I assure you that when you do come back after reviewing something else you will feel much better and have a more open mind.

Take your questions to one of your Chem college professors..I did. The last piece of advice I have for you is do not use Barrons...It is full of mistakes. Use Kaplan it is the key to doing well on the DAT trust me.

Keep in mind that you can take the DAT at any day of the year there is no use in putting pressure on yourself for a topic that will maybe have 1 or 2 questions on it. You will do fine! :D
