How important is the Dean of Admissions in the selection of applicants? Is the Dean usually involved in the process, or does s/he just oversee and mediate in disputed decisions? If you have a good experience/conversation with the Dean, is that at all important? Is it a good idea to try to meet the Dean of Admissions during your interview day?

Just curious...maybe this varies from school to school too...

I think theirs is the most important voice. Either theirs or a director of admissions.

dean chairs the committee meetings, occasionally interviews applicants... bad person to p*ss off, but in the end has the same vote and probably less influence than your interviewer. I wouldn't make a special effort to meet with them, just have some good questions for your interviewer and act interested in the school to everyone you DO come in contact with (read: admissions staff).

I would think they are very important. I would assume that if you had the ear of the dean of admissions you have a good shot.

The dean of the medical school in my town goes to my gym. I wonder if I should try to impress him with how much weight I can lift so that he will help me get into med school.

less influence b/c the dean did not personally conduct the interview?

i think very influential. at brown the dean told us that he and the other director of admissions can flag files for auto-admit. that is, they will look over files and say "no discussion, this person is in."

yes. at my school (unlike the brown rumor) even people the dean likes get voted on. if the dean likes you, awesome, but it has equal weight as your interviewer liking you because all members of the committee respect each others judgment. so it's a bonus if you happen to know them or whatnot, but where it would be more important is in contacting them to let them know what you liked about the school, how much you want to come there, etc when you're on the waitless. hope this helps.

What do you guys think if you have a fairly decent application and dean of admissions was to flag your application? Good shot?

Flag it positively? I think you'd be in.
