To keep up the technology talk:

Does anyone know when we are supposed to get the computers? Is it something that will be delivered to us or are we getting them during orientation?

Also, I have T-mobile and had a rough time getting a signal and checking my voice mail. I was thinking of getting Cingular (partially so I can get an iPhone). Any thoughts on this?

I have cingular and love it, but I live in Knoxville. It seems to work without any problems when we are in the area house hunting though.

We switched to Verizon. I was told that most people in the area have Verizon, although I think that Cingular still has decent service.

I live in East TN and had Cingular for a while and it sucked. I won't ever use them again, at least around here.

That is so funny. We have had Cingular for 9 yrs and tried Sprint for a few months somewhere in that time and hated it! We switched back and haven't had any problems since. Plus my husband used to travel all over the east coast and rarely had any problems.

I do know that a lot of people do have Verizon, especially in Chattanooga. And I have no idea about how Cingular service is in Kentucky except that it is fine near the interstates.

I was told by many people in the area that Verizon is the best. We had service pretty much everywhere when we were driving around looking for a house. But, Verizon doesn't work in KY at all. I heard that Cingular is okay, but not as good as Verizon. We have been very happy with Verizon so far, no complaints.

LOL! That is what my husband said too. No, I really prefer working with people, although I obviously love animals. I love plants too though, but I think plant biology is boring. I will just be a rural FM doc so I can be out in the country and have lots of animals and plants. That way I get everything that I want. :D

Back in reference to the housing, so like, lets say I'm married, but my wife's not going to live with me for any extended period of time, just visits...would I be able to get the 2 room housing. Because my worry is that if we change our minds later, all the 2 rooms would be booked. Then again, if she moves up, i might go ahead and get something else...anybody seen duplexes in the area?

Was anyone able to get any further specifics on the computer? I know we all got the Leo email (which was sweet), but it didn't go into too much detail. Questions such as...how fast is processor, will it have office, etc.? Man its nice of Pete to buy us those things, they are sweet. A guy I know has one and its neat.

I bought the same computer through UT and it did not come with Office...but that doesn't mean anything. I would think that they would so we would have excel and PowerPoint. But if not, UT sells it for $60 (dirt cheap)to students so I'm sure LMU does too. :) :)

good point...student pricing on office is really cheap. I imagine that it may come pre-loaded because the vast majority of our lectures are ppt's if I recall correctly (someone correct me if im wrong).

So, I was wondering if anyone happens to know some unofficial numbers for how many people have accepted seats at DCOM. I am currently on the waitlist and feel as though I've contacted them way to much lately, so I wanted to ask on here. Thanks

Last I heard (early March) 100 deposits were in and there were 61 on the waitlist. But, I think on the last thread some said there were 100 on the waitlist. I would say that there will be pretty good movement off the waitlist, but prrobably not for another month or so.

:luck: :luck: Good Luck to everyone waiting :luck: :luck:

For LMU and surrounding area + Middelsboro Cingular is best. This is what a provider told me. You need a phone which uses "multi-band" technology, not CDMA (not sure about diff). Cingular and T-mobile use the multi-band chips. The phones will say tri-band or quad-band. I guess the area has different towers which overlap with different fequencies.

Sorry trying to recall everything the phone guy explained. Verizon is decent, but does not have enough towers out and around in county.

    Just my $0.02

Once you cross through the tunnel into Kentucky, you have absolutely no cell service with Verizon. But, the rest of the time we were down there it was fine. I think it didn't work when we were way out in Sneedville looking at a house, but that was only for a short time. I doubt that anything works out there. If you drove out there, you would see what I am talking about. It is really rural! We have those Razr phones and I don't know what type of band is in them, but they work well. I think that probably either Verizon or Cingular will be fine. :)

Goats eat everything! I saw it in the middle east, seriously, they eliminate the need for recycling paper and anything else that will decompose.

We had Nextel when I went to my interview, and it didn't work for at least an hour before I even got to DCOM. We had no service the entire time! The same thing happened when I went to my interview at Pikeville. It could have been the phone that we had, but I don't honestly know. From talking to people in the area, it seems like Cingular and Verizon are definitely the way to go.

This is the best I've got. I couldn't get in to them when I went but Dr. Leo let me peek in the windows.

The first is the living room/kitchen side of a two room unit. The second is the bedroom side. Third is the one room unit. We'll just pretend that wire isn't in the way.... If you want the full size pictures let me know.

Not a problem. :) I'm pretty sure it was March 9th. I went down to try and find some other apartments in the area and stopped by to see how things were going with the school. Unfortunately I could only find 3 other places (all in Middlesboro) and none of them were really an option. The first was reeeeeeeeally nice looking, Cumberland woods apartments, but are reserved for the elderly, handicapped and disabled. Happy Hollow Apartments are need/income based apartments and the woman in the rental office could give me no information and they don't have a demo unit. From the way she was talking there's basically a waiting list to live there. Cumberland Village seemed to be one of those places that only has 6 units available, and was in a less than desirable area...

Has anyone been to any other places in the area?
