Hello,

I was referred here by a buddy of mine and after looking around a bit, I realized just how helpful this site would have been when I was applying and I wish I would have found it earlier. Anyway, right now I have narrowed down where I will go to two schools, Ohio State and the University of Cincinnati. After going back and visiting the schools, they both seem like great schools and I would enjoy attending either one. What I'm looking for is some advice on perhaps what other criteria I should use to help make a decision or how all of you in similar situations approached this problem so that I can make a final decision and begin apartment hunting. I am trying to make as informed a decision as I can, as I know that changing my mind about which school to attend or transferring cannot easily be done, if at all.

Thank you.

Wow, congratulations, C, those are both great schools.
Think about curriculum, location, look at their match lists (there should be a thread as a sticky on the top of this sub-forum), talk with any doctor friends you may have, if one of them offers you a scholarship that may make life a little easier, there are a lot of other criteria that I don't want to get into because it's x-mas and I can't think. Sorry about that, but congratulations again!

I'd go with Cincinnati. Nice city, great education, and nice people. 👍

I agree! That way you can free up a space at OSU for me!! Bwa ha ha! Just kidding, both great schools. I felt that Cincinnati is probably a better, more "festive" place to live with more things to do, but OSU seemed like a more prestigious school with better equipment. But it's all about your personal feeling you got from the two environment. One little tidbit you may find interesting is that you get better cadaver ratio at Cincinnati though, only 4 students to a cadaver (as opposed to 6 students at OSU), which is the lowest ratio I've ever heard of. Also, UCinn's clinical skills center and standardised patient programme is older and better established than OSU's, and supposedly OSU copied UCinn's system. I must admit, I'm actively trying to push you to go to UCinn because I really want to go to OSU. I know, I'm a terrible person!

If you like both schools and cities more or less equally, you might want to consider waiting until financial aid packages come out to withdraw from either one. Cost of living in Columbus might be a LITTLE bit less, but not enough to base your decision on. I don't know when either school starts offering scholarships, but I do know that Ohio State is currently making a big drive to increase the amount of $$ available for scholarships.

Definitely consider curriculum choices, as others have said. I went to Ohio State completely and totally convinced that I would be doing IP (integrated pathway). It wasn't long into anatomy that I changed my tune. Mind you, this is not a reflection on the anatomy module, because the profs and lectures are AWESOME. I am currently doing ISP (independent study) and love it.

I wouldn't base your decision on students/cadaver ratio. In the grand scheme of things, anatomy is just a tiny portion of your four years (12 weeks at OSU).

You have lots of time to get housing. In fact, it might pay to wait some, because if you get into the summer and rental agencies are looking at empty units, they might throw in some free rent or reduced deposits.

Take your time, talk to some people. I know I'm going to get flamed for saying this, but don't forget that you have until May 15th before you have to withdraw from one of them. OSU's deposit is $25, and I don't remember having one at Cinci.

Good luck in your decision!
