sorry to add to todays influx of deferment threads...
some of you may have seen a thread i posted a few weeks ago about deferring... I have had a lifelong dream of completing the triple crown of long distance backpacking (Pacific Crest, Continental Divide, and Appalachian trails). There was a short lived consideration of the Coast to Coast route also. 7k+miles either choice. Anyway, this adventure would take around 1 year (hopefully i'll finish in less).
Deferment initially seemed like the best option, but, assuming i get into a medical school I'm happy with, a leave of absence may be better. (though if i dont get in anywhere i like, im heading off for sure, i suspect this might increase my chances anyway). Reasons for the LOA over deferment? well in addition to simply backpacking, i would very much like to test the effects of long distance hiking, fast changes in altitude etc on my body, and any lasting effects, while perfecting protocols for on trail personal care. having some medical school education would better allow me to do this, and id have resources not otherwise available, plus grant money to help pay for this, which will otherwise be all on me, and hopefully some smaller outdoor gear company sponsorships.
so what is the criteria for deferment? is such a research project/adventure for personal growth worthy. Id assume it should be taken between 2nd and 3rd years. or would you recommend deferment? opinions
