Deferral/LOA policies?

So I'm very seriously considering deferring a year before beginning my MSTP and I was wondering if any of you have had experience with that, or with taking a leave of absence for personal reasons? From the research I've done so far it seems that of the schools I've applied to, Michigan and UNC are pretty willing to grant a 1-yr deferral. UW seems pretty strict (only for exceptional circumstances), and I have 0 idea about Hopkins.

No news from JHU yet, but it's my top choice,.. I'd like to find out about their policy asap, but I hesitate to ask them before they've made their decision...
