I intend to do a 3 year Internal Medicine Residency. I need to defer for various legitimate personal reasons.

Does anyone know if it is even possible to get a deferrment in the USAF if I choose I.M. as my residency???

(I noticed no one deferred from this year's match).

it is extremely rare and is on case-by-case

i don't know of any IM deferments, but a few years back there was an FP deferment due to various personal reasons. He went on to train in a civilian FP program and is now the flight surgeon for a very famous F-16 squadron

You caught me. I'm actually keeping my options open. Anesthesiology is currenly in a 3 way tie with IM and Neuro. Actually one of the 3 is a front-runner, but who really ever knows at this point?

By the way....how did you remember me?

I remember you wrote me a month or so ago asking me about Anesthesia in the military. A lot of people did not match in the military this year, including Anesthesia. I think I added up all of the people you did not match as evidenced by all of the people getting deferments for transitional year only, and the number came up to 18%. The Air Force website is full of crap when they tell you that 98% get their first choice of SPECIALTY. Then they go ahead and tell us that they are phasing out the GMO and flight surgery positions??? Anyway, I heard almost everybody who went for IM got their position. I don't remember if there were any deferments given out for IM, but you can check it out at the following link

http://www.afpc.randolph.af.mil/medical/PhysicianEducation/default.htm

Good luck figuring out what you want to do.

.

There is no such thing as far as the military is concerned.......except (exceptional family members) for medical problems of spouses or family members requiring duty station near certain medical facilities....

absolutely does not apply interms of deferements.

That's cool you remembered my name. Thanks again for the info. By the way, I didn't call mostly because I realized that I am still undecided. I will be in touch once I figure things out if that's still cool.

I didn't know the USAF was phasing out the GMO and Flight Surgeons. That makes it way harded to deal with not matching ! Do you know any more about this topic (dates, etc?)
