Could someone please define 1.) Afferent limb 2.) Efferent limb 3.) Roux limb for me when it comes to gastric bypass? :scared:

It appears that the afferent limb is the same as the roux limb (= proximal to the gastrojejunal anastomosis) and the efferent limb is distal. Is this correct?

Does anyone know any references or websites (with simple pictures for my feeble mind) on this definition?

a) Creation of an anastomosis between the stomach and jejunum leaves a segment of small bowel, consisting of duodenum and proximal jejunum (usually around 15 cm distal to the lig of Treitz), lying upstream from the gastrojejunostomy, which is the afferent loop.

b) The efferent limb, or the Roux limb, generally from 75 - 150 cm in length, is the limb from the gastrojejunostomy to the jejunojejunostomy anastomosis. The length of this limb can affect weight loss and the longer lengths are often used in the super obese.

As for pictures, here's one...although its not well labeled...http://www.webmd.com/hw-popup/Gastric-bypass-surgery-for-obesity

Here's a You Tube video apparently showing the lap Roux...disclaimer, I haven't watched it myself, so am not sure how helpful it is (it is 45 minutes in length, so obviously some portions are left out):http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypPnUnAtQb8
