does anyone know the actual number of med school programs in CALI and possibly the names of them?

I'm going to apply to med schools next year and want to stay in cali, I realize the competition is fierce, so I basically want to apply to EVERY cali school....does anyone know them off hand or where i can find that info? i tried to search and not having any luck.

There are 8 schools I think (USC, UCLA, UCI, UCSD, UCSF, Stanford, USC, and Loma Linda). You should try looking in the MSAR for more information or else you can go to the school's websites. 🙂 Hope that helps.

dude, you are forgetting the Drew program! making it a total of 9 programs you can apply in california. 🙂

Cali schools are so difficult - you might at least apply to ohsu or a few private schools. If nothing else, the private schools will give you early practice with interviewing, so you can wow the cali schools. Smash the MCAT!

hopefully you are kidding. otherwise you have a lot to learn 🙁. unfortunately 3,858 cali residents applied in 2002 with only 500 spots in uc's.

Actually there is 10 if you include the UCR/UCLA accelerated biomedical program which accepts 24 into the UCLA class each year, and it is what I am in. However, to get into the program you have to apply after high school.

basically that just means there are 24 less spots for in-state non-ucr people at ucla, though, right?

Don't forget Western University, an osteopathic school in Pomona. The might be another DO school out there, but I don't remember it.

[Brag] Also, the past two year SC has admitted the best class statistically in their history. My classes stats was 3.65 and a 32.4 MCAT.[/Brag]

As I understand it, UCLA has 148 spots open. 24 go the Drew program and 24 go to the UCR/UCLA program, leaving the actual UCLA spots that are available to everyone at 100.
This is how I think it works, there are around 150 spots at UCLA at one given time. Around 125 of them go to UCLAs' main program, around 25 from drew, and around 25 from ucr. During the first two years the 125 main and 25 drew strudents take basic sci classes at UCLA. Add that 125 to the around 25 from Drew/UCLA to get a total 150. While the 25 or so from UCR do their 2 years basic sci at UCR. Then during the clinical years as the 25 drew students go to rotate at drew the 25 or so UCR students come to UCLA to do clinicals making the total UCLA class around 150 again. In the end they all get medical degrees from UCLA.

if you want to get technical, then there are many more md programs in california, at least 13. usc and ucsd both have BS/MD programs. ucsf has the MS/MD joint medical program with berkeley...

thanks everyone for the great info..especially deuce and pocsman!
